Be Donated To Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), For Whom Annette Has Performed Numerous Benefit Concerts
From the name of her indie label, Inspired Records, to her deeply introspective song lyrics and ongoing involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) and other charities, singer/songwriter Annette brings a deep sense of spirituality to her many musical and music-related endeavors. That includes her ethereal, Enya-flavored twist on Bryan Adams' classic power ballad “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You,” which was the #1 most added song its debut week (September 19, 2005) on Radio & Records' Adult Contemporary chart and is currently building steam at radio.
This follows the track's incredible success on the ACQB Top 40, where it rose to #9 after its May release. This month, Annette is traveling to Nashville to shoot a new video for the track, which is the first single from her powerful and compelling new album Growing Into Myself . While she's there, she will also be filming a television commercial promoting her new release.
Her label is also releasing the single “Ask”—a true call to spiritual action in a time of superficiality—to Christian AC radio. Next month, keeping the momentum going, she will be releasing an original holiday single called “The Christmas Waltz.”
A portion of the proceeds from the deeply introspective Growing Into Myself will be donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA), whose centennial celebration in 2004 launched a national campaign to encourage more adults to lend their time and talent to mentoring a single child in need of friendship and guidance.
Devoting much of her time and talent to the organization for the past two years, Annette asked Inspired Records to sponsor a 3-song CD called I Believe in conjunction with their 100-year milestone. She was the headline performer at a black tie gala on Chelsea Piers (where she was introduced by former NFL great Lynn Swann and sang “America The Beautiful”), and also sang at a follow-up event on an outdoor stage at Bryant Park. She later performed for BBBSA's Palm Beach , Florida chapter at Donald Trump's posh Mar-a-Lago resort.
“Music shapes the minds and emotions of our youth and affects how we face each day,” says Annette, whose past charitable associations include Feed The Children, The University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and The Possible Dream Foundation. “Listening to uplifting and positive messages helps us in the midst of all the negativity in our world. We need to work hard to keep spiritually strong and I believe that surrounding ourselves with uplifting and spiritually enlightening music can promote positive energy and provide us with the strength that we need in our daily lives. Growing Into Myself is my contribution and I hope others enjoy listening as much as I have enjoyed growing with it.”
Helping Annette realize her vision over the course of the collection's 15 tracks—which includes two uplifting interludes entitled “You Can Be Anything”--is longtime collaborator Michael Kowal, Annette's co-producer who also plays bass, guitar and piano. Kowal wrote or co-wrote (with Annette) all of the album's original material, and provides an imaginative, seductive arrangement of Stevie Wonder's soul-stirring “Heaven Is 10 Zillion Light Years Away.”
“I met him through some of the people I worked with in Nashville several years ago when I was doing my country flavored albums A Love Like Ours and All The Way To Crazy ,” says Annette. “From the beginning, we had a great relationship and flow, and the chemistry has evolved in a wonderful way. Working with him, I started to shift gears into the kind of music that was my truest heart, writing songs with spiritually centered lyrics that would be thought provoking and more passionate.
“The new album reflects my philosophy that you spend your whole life really growing into yourself,” she adds. “When that growth stops, you stagnate and lose the passion for life. But if you follow the fire, you can always have it. The songs on the album reflect the kind of wisdom, responsibility and longevity that adult contemporary fans can relate to.”
Once Annette and Kowal had completed “Ask,” they felt they had found the driving force of the entire project. “I love the concept of feeling empowered as the roots of my life become deeper and more stable,” she says. “We also had the idea of presenting what we call worldly music, which involves matching the spirituality of the songs with more exotic textures. Michael's idea of adding African drums and chanting to ‘Your Spirit's Song' was brilliant. ‘Save Me' is a deeply spiritual song about reaching out to a higher power. No matter how positive we can be at any given moment, there are still times when we feel the weight of the world upon us. So this is a universal prayer to God, which is also interchangeable with the love between a man and a woman. I was going through a tough time when I wrote it, and it was very cathartic for me.”
An Italian immigrant born in Rocca Bernarda, a small town in the Province Catanzaro, Annette—who came to the U.S. as a young child--comes from a large musical family. Some of her siblings are accomplished musicians, and she has fond childhood memories of her father playing the mandolin and accordion. After growing up on a steady mix of classical music, Stevie Wonder and Frank Sinatra, Annette's love for Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn inspired her to become a jazz singer while attending the University of Wisconsin . During this time, she headlined many of the hot clubs on Chicago 's famed Rush Street and at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee .
Early on, she performed with “The Kids from Wisconsin ” ensemble, and was lead vocalist for a jazz and pop band that toured the Midwest . Before turning her attention to developing a solo career, Annette worked as a commercial jingle singer in Maryland and performed as a background vocalist for several entertainers.
“I'm ready to take my career to the next level, which I truly believe is part of the process of Growing Into Myself that the album is all about,” she says. “I'm looking forward to doing live shows, and I hope that people find my lyrics and music thought provoking and uplifting, something that brings hopefulness to their lives. So much of pop music these days is geared to kids and no one else, but there's a whole audience of adults who want to hear music that speaks to their lives and hearts, that they can latch on to. It's my great privilege to create music that I believe will do just that.”
