BORDELLO CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR THE WEEK OF SEPT 3RD TO SEPT 9TH

Located at 901 E. 1st St., Bordello, formerly Little Pedro's, flirts with the notorious past of its infamous location, as the oldest bar and brothel in Downtown Los Angeles, by reflecting its legendary status as a theater of the unusual and provocative. The completely renovated and colorfully redecorated venue has been appropriately renamed by famed L.A. club owner Tony Gower, celebrity designer Dana Hollister, revolutionary urban planner Elizabeth Peterson and innovative restaurateur Jim Venetos.

On September 3rd, Bordello and The Fold Present Marty Klingman from Gliss ; Black Olive ; Colorforms ; Hour Of The Shipwreck

On Monday September 3rd, Bordello and The Fold are presenting  Marty Klingman from Gliss @ 8pm ; Black Olive @ 9 ; Colorforms @ 10 ; Hour Of The Shipwreck @ 11

Hour Of The Shipwreck is the incarnation of permanent fantasy. Lost in a world that is Victorian and Baroque, frightening and dark, but comforting and intoxicating, a land of skeletons, pirate ships and willow tree forests. It is a dream and a nightmare, and it is becoming more real every moment. it will be a day of true beauty when the music walks hand in hand with the theme park, but until then, the pump organs and steel strings, drummings and voices shall remain singing in the darkest harmonies. Colorforms is a Los Angeles-area band featuring the ethereal voice of Alex Lilly. In a crowded field of sometimes-electronic chanteuse/auteurs (see also Bjork, Feist, Cibelle, Colleen, Psapp, etc), Lilly's subversive songwriting, patient composition and impressive production announce an artist to be reckoned with

On September 4th, Bordello and The Fold Present Leslie King ; Suki Ewers ; The Sheers

On Tuesday September 4th, Bordello and The Fold are presenting  Leslie King @ 9pm ; Suki Ewers @ 10 ; The Sheers @ 11

After performing for several years with Anemone, a band once touted as the missing link in the country music/dream pop connection, Suki Ewers  spent the last couple of years in the studio working with Joe Kennedy on a set of nine songs. These were eventually sent off to be mixed and masterd by Kramer. The result is hazy, bittersweet pop in the vein of Galaxie 500 and Felt. The songs are at once dreamy and enigmatic yet immediately accessible. Suki manages to evoke much of the same delicately pretty gloominess as Opal while adding her own serenely melodic warmth.

On Wednesday September 5th, Bordello and The Fold Present Kassia Conway @ 8pm ; Grand Hallway @ 9 ; Buddy @ 10 ; Pink Mochi @ 11

Grand Hallway is an art-pop ensemble from Seattle, Washington. Consisting of Tomo Nakayama (Asahi, Jen Wood) on piano and vocals, Erik Neumann (Lillydale, Maldives) on bass, Bob Roberts (Joules, Vermillion) on drums, Jeramy Koepping (Voyager One) on guitar, Alina To and Jaclyn Shumate on violins, and Esther Shin on cello, Grand Hallway has been making music together since the fall of 2005. They have performed locally at venues such as Neumo's, Crocodile Cafe, Vera Project, and the Tractor Tavern, alongside artists such as Damien Jurado (Secretly Canadian Records), Dead Science (Absolutely Kosher).

Buddy 's live band consists of: Grammy Award® winning drummer Michael Jerome (John Cale, Blind Boys of Alabama), Will Golden (Gary Jules), Percy Haverson (Knifeyhead), Al Sgro (Gary Jules), Fil Krohnengold (Golden Smog, Duncan Sheik). “Alterations and Repairs”, Buddy's debut Album, will be arriving spring 2007 and features guest musicians/vocalists including: Anna-Lynne Williams (trespassers william), Ben Peeler (Alexi Murdoch), Meiko (Meiko), Ollie (Sia, Tom McRae). Ready for dessert? Pink Mochi is a sweet sticky rice dough often filled with ice cream but traditionally it has a sweet red bean dessert in the middle. This Pink Mochi however is filled with sweet sounds ready to be devoured. Pink Mochi is a musical output and friendship of Ai, Michael, Lisa, & Tim. Heavily influenced by experimental indie rock guitars, Japanese cannibals, and lots of food & drinks. All this and more comes through their hybrid-electronic-indie-pop-laptop-rock sound. Pink Mochi has been playing extensively in the Los Angeles area sharing the same bill with such bands as Devotchka, United States of Electronica, Apostle of Hustle, Boom Bip, Fog, the Movies, Whitey and many more great artists. Last fall they were on a North American tour with the world famous Suicide Girls Burlesque show.

On September 6th BORDELLO and The Fold Present The Hogwash Jump Joint

On September 7th Bordello Presents Ranch Round-Up With Ramblin' James & The Billy Boppers and Amber Foxx

On Thursday September 7th, Bordello presents Amber Foxx @ 10:30 p.m ; James & The Billyboppers @ 12

Californians RAMBLIN' JAMES & THE BILLY BOPPERS were utterly spiffing, wizard and top-hole. James' idiosyncratic voice is not to everyone's taste but I love the traditional, highly energetic sound this band makes. James and guitarist Ashley ‘(Flyrite Boys) Kingman are both ex-pat Brits, so I feel a surge of jingoistic pride. If you don't have their album then you are a sad-sack and a loser. - rockabillyrave.co.uk

Amber Foxx is a Traditional Rockabilly and Country Singer from Anaheim, California. Her band blends Country and Jazz sounds of early Patsy Cline and Kay Starr and mixes it with Rock and Roll similar to Janis Martin and the Collins Kids. Amber has gained international fans from playing Viva Las Vegas 9 on the main stage.

BORDELLO CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR THE WEEK OF AUG 27TH TO SEPT 2ND

Located at 901 E. 1st St., Bordello, formerly Little Pedro's, flirts with the notorious past of its infamous location, as the oldest bar and brothel in Downtown Los Angeles, by reflecting its legendary status as a theater of the unusual and provocative. The completely renovated and colorfully redecorated venue has been appropriately renamed by famed L.A. club owner Tony Gower, celebrity designer Dana Hollister, revolutionary urban planner Elizabeth Peterson and innovative restaurateur Jim Venetos.

On August 27th, Bordello and The Fold Present I Make This Sound, Le Switch , The Monolators, and Papillon

On Monday August 27th, Bordello and The Fold are presenting  Le Switch @ 8:30pm ; Papillon @ 9:30 ; I Make This Sound @ 10:30 ; Monolators @ 11:30

I Make This Sound - “A single listen is all some releases need to convincingly argue their case and no better recent example than that is I Make This Sound's 25-minute six-pack ‘Everything Means Something' … deftly segues between guitar-based rave-ups and enchanting balladry … Everything Means Something is that rare EP that opens strongly and gets better with each passing song”

Le Switch have performed live on KXLU's "Demolisten" and have turned on Audiences around L.A. with their steady rock hard sound.

The Monolators are a husband-and-wife rock duo from Los Angeles. Their music has been played on every major indie radio station in Los Angeles: tracks from their demos and album received airplay on KCRWs Weekend Becomes Eclectic , Indie 103.1's Check 1-2-3 , KXLUs legendary Demolisten and KPFKs Nixon Tapes . Papillon's song "Patterns on Your Fingertips," featuring the voice of Liz Brown, has been heard on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic", featured on the third season finale of Showtime series "The L Word", and most recently on an episode of ABC's "What About Brian". "Almost Like Being There" and "Les Cannibales" can also be heard on the Suicide Girls' second DVD, "Italian Villa". All three songs appear together as an EP that is now available through CDbaby.com and Apple iTunes.

On August 28th, Bordello and The Fold Present Correatown, The Finches, Long Tones, Women and Children, and Wonderground

On Tuesday August 28th, Bordello and The Fold are presenting  Correatown @ 8:30pm ; Long Tones @ 9:15 ; The Finches @ 10 ; Wonderground @ 10:45 ; Women and Children @ 11:30

SF Weekly say's "Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, The Finches' lead singer, has a perfect folk voice. It's a timeless, fragile warble that's country and urban, childlike and womanly, airy and earthy. On her band's debut full-length, Human Like a House , Riggs and bandmate Aaron Morgan contribute subtle chiming guitar lines to melodies that veer off in unexpected directions"

Since she was a kid   Correatown has  been singing, songwriting, and playing music in one form or another. She has been writing and playing her own americana tinged singer-songwriter tunes for years now. She rearranges and sings traditional folks songs and American songbook standards from the Golden Age of music.

WonderGround recorded 3 songs at the glorious Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood with engineer Chris Reynolds (Elliott Smith, The Jayhawks). Their demo showed much promise, garnering reviews from both UK and US press and entering rotation on Indie 103.1, KCRW, and UCLA radio. After playing shows around LA for the last year and a half, WonderGround just finished recording their debut 5 song EP with revered indie rock producer Aaron Espinoza (Earlimart), which is already receiving rave reviews.

On Wednesday August 29th, Bordello and The Fold Present Tar Volts @ 8:30pm ; Voxhaul Broadcast @ 9:30 ; Saint Motel @ 10:30

When  Saint Motel  decided to make music they were heavily influenced by the films they were studying and their love of Beethovens seventh symphony. As they describe, “Sometimes we approach songs in a visual sense, much like a film. There's an intro, which establishes what's at stake while the body of the song fleshes out the story. There's often a plot twist 3/4 of the way through the song which takes the form of a bridge. Then, of course, the conclusion which settles everything back to normal…or does it? Hahaha.”

On August 30th BORDELLO and The Fold Present Rose Rossi, Romanovs, Annie Stela and Sierra Swan

On Thursday August 30th, Bordello and The Fold are presenting Rose Rossi @ 8pm ; Romanovs @ 9 ; Annie Stela @ 10 ; Sierra Swan @ 11

Rose Rossi is a 24 year old Los Angeles native. Rose's debut album, entitled Hello To You , is due for an early 2008 release, and Rose plans to support its release with plenty of touring. She explains, “Now that the process of recording is over, I am looking forward to getting back out to perform this material live. The theatrics of the whole experience gives an excitement and energy that brings the material alive in a special way.”

Annie Stela's  EP There Is A Story Here is a sentient rumination on innocence and innocence betrayed, love and lust, home and leaving home. It was produced by Bill Bottrell (Shelby Lynne, Madonna, Sheryl Crow), who also produced Stela's upcoming full-length album. He and Stela agreed the instrumentation should be sparse, allowing the songs to shine. The Sonus Quartet, a string quartet whose young musicians intuitively mirrored Stela's command of classical and rock styles, played on some tracks, as did Bottrell and his friends Brian MacLeod (drums) and Dan Schwartz (bass), but There Is A Story Here is primarily a piano-driven record from an artist who, remarkably enough, despised piano lessons as a child.

BORDELLO CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR THE WEEK OF AUG 20TH TO AUG 26TH

The completely renovated and colorfully redecorated venue has been appropriately renamed by famed L.A. club owner Tony Gower, celebrity designer Dana Hollister, revolutionary urban planner Elizabeth Peterson and innovative restaurateur Jim Venetos.

Deciding to follow her lead into the glamorous world of independent music, he learned to play some various musical instruments and proceeded to spend his youth underpaid and sleep-deprived, traveling around three continents and sharing the stage with various musicians, hucksters, bums and go-go dancers.

Dave “Pappy” Stuckey is the latest addition to The Lucky Stars' all-star line up; it turns out that this multi-talented character can play drums too! Highly prized Bass fiddle-man, Wally Hersom, known to many as an original member of Big Sandy's band, joined up with The Lucky Stars outfit several years back bringing his well-honed style and expertise to the band's rhythm section. Russ Blake is the tacit guitar player The Lucky Stars spent over five years searching for. On August 25th, Bordello and The Fold Present Black and Gold Record's Release Party featuring Sam Sparro, Roc, Casxio and Shenanigans Posse

On Saturday August 25th, Bordello and The Fold are presenting Black and Gold Record's Release Party featuring Roc @ 9, Casxio @ 10, Sam Sparro @ 12, and Shenanigans Posse DJ sets

Sam Sparro orbits into our stratosphere like a messenger from the future sent to hold off the end of the summer blues with one last wild party. As he says in the lead track "S.A.M.S.P.A.R.R.O." of the EP Black & Gold, out August 21 on Modus Vivendi Music, "He has a lot to say and a lot to do."

And so the road is paved in Black & Gold. The journey is ours for the taking, led by the cunning musicologist out to show us a good time. Through six brisk tracks, Sam thrusts into the limelight sounds and textures at once foreign and familiar - '70s soul grooves, '80s freestyle beats, '90s garage - cornerstones from the heydays of youth when idealism ruled and our personal soundtracks reflected the upward trajectory of our lives. Like a cheeky historian, Sam culls the archives of forgotten record bins and coaxes his findings in unexpected ways - creating an infectious musical soundscape loaded with sex appeal. And soon we are enraptured, knowing full well how his heart beats.

The Blue Hawaiians Are Resurfacing and Surfing To BORDELLO This Sunday, August 26th

The Band That Had A 10-Year Residency At Lava Lounge Is Now Rockin' At Bordello Every Sunday Night

The Blue Hawaiians  are continuing their  weekly Sunday event at Bordello on August 26th at 9:30pm with a $5 cover.

The Blue Hawaiians are a surf-rock group from Los Angeles who rose to fame from their 10-year residency at Lava Lounge and also by influencing one of their earliest fans, Quentin Tarantino, who chose surf oddities for the soundtrack to his next film, Pulp Fiction . The band also had an appearance on the soundtrack of the hit TV show "Friends" and recently have provided music for the hit cartoon series "SpongeBob SquarePants".

Called by some critics "the best tiki/lounge band on earth," The Blue Hawaiians' music ventures beyond happy hour and into the moody and dramatic, with a touch of mysterioso. By combining two unlikely elements, a Hawaiian steel guitar and a Hammond B3 organ, otherwise cheery music becomes eerie and melancholy. Their occasional renditions of surf classics in performance are spooky wipeouts rather than faithful sun-and-fun homages.

On Tuesday August 14th, Bordello and The Fold are presenting Ghost Town @ 9 ; The Finches @ 10 ;  The Coral Sea @ 11 SF Weekly say's "Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, The Finches' lead singer, has a perfect folk voice. Santa Barbara, Calif.'s The Coral Sea keep it real. As in simple and traditional songwriting that doesn't need fancy tricks, let alone technological crutches to keep it standing. Volcano and Heart is a reminder of the days when chops and songwriting still ruled the day. The Coral Sea has no tricks up its sleeve, save for a handle on crisp, shimmering pop. Drawing on a sea of influences in which eddies of Yo La Tengo and Sparklehorse twirl around with backwash from Roxy Music and David Bowie, The Coral Sea comes through with an album that's well aware of pop traditions as well as today's crop of indie-rock favorites. - Aversion.com

Johnny Indovina of Human Drama begins the next chapter in the book of his musical life with Sound of the Blue Heart , a new song collection filled with the plush musical arrangements and passionately enchanting lyrics that he has become famous for.

Sound of the Blue Heart continues to explore the beautiful textures that Human Drama established, coaxing the listener into songs with thought provoking insights and infectious rhythms. In "Beauty?", Indovina contemplates the fickleness of fate, as a dreamlike melody pulls the song along like a slow moving car through crowded city streets. “The Great Escape” finds Indovina softly repeating one of the undeniable truths of life - “there are so many ways to tarnish a beautiful thing”, and later, the smooth pulse of "River of Love" paints a haunting backdrop for Indovina's musings on the frailty of love

On August 6th, Bordello and The Fold Present I Make This Sound, Princeton, Valentino, The Northern Two

On Monday August 6th, Bordello and The Fold present The Northern Two @ 8:30 ; Valentino @ 9:30 ; Princeton @ 10:30 ; I Make This Sound @ 11:30

Princeton is made up of twins, Matt and Jesse Kivel, and their musical cohort Ben Usen; all Los Angeles natives who have been performing together for a number of years. In 2005 All three had elected to spend a year studying at various universities in London. They performed prolifically, electing to earn their chops with an old fashioned sense of hard work. No venue was too small, and no performance requirement was too demanding. Some shows lasted as long as two hours with the boys plowing through all of their material, nursing their exhaustion with heavy doses of beer and caffeine. The live shows earned Princeton a loyal following in the UK indie scene and lead to a couple of radio appearances (Radio Star Fleet London, Smoke Radio).

On Tuesday August 7th, Bordello and The Fold are presenting Tenlons Fort @ 8:30 ; Gwendolyn @ 9:30 ; The Finches @ 10:30 ; Jeff Hanson @ 11:30 SF Weekly say's "Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, the Finches' lead singer, has a perfect folk voice. On her band's debut full-length, Human Like a House , Riggs and bandmate Aaron Morgan contribute subtle chiming guitar lines to melodies that veer off in unexpected directions"

According to Entertainment Weekly, GWENDOLYN'S music is reminiscent of "abstract meditations on obsession amid a psychedelic-acoustic cabaret that suggests Sam Phillips borrowing Tom Waits' bottle-banging percussion.”

Jeff Hanson cut his teeth playing in Midwestern emo-rockers M.I.J., but opted to trade the Marshalls for Martins upon going solo. Jeff was signed to Olympia, Washington's influential Kill Rock Stars label based on a demo alone, to give you an idea of what kind of first impression the singer/songwriter leaves. His first solo album, 2003's critically acclaimed Son, followed, to almost unanimously glowing reviews.

Whether it was the lyrics, dripping as they are with rich imagination, or the bouncy, carnival-like melodies, this unusual band of artists had me throwing back martinis and dancing with strangers only to leave me wondering at the end of the night if perhaps there is, in fact, such a thing as retrofuturepopexotica.

On August 29th, BORDELLO and The Fold Present Saint Motel, Tar Volts and Voxhaul Broadcast
