The Show Launches Its Summer Tour On June 25 At The Greek Theatre, At A Concert Featuring
Bob Weir & Ratdog and The Stringcheese Incident
As if the legendary Ozzfest event, rushing headlong into its second decade, needed an excuse to attract more freaks, The Bros. Grim Side Show —billed as “The World's Greatest Collection Of Human Oddities, Strange People and Novel Entertainers” —will be pitching its tent on the grounds of venues on this summer's annual U.S. tour.
Fitting right in with the Ozzfest Village of the Damned eclectic array of tattoo artists, piercing booths, state-of-the-art video games and wickedly tempting vendors, The Mothership of all Side Shows will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day of the festival, beginning July 11 in San Antonio through August 13 in West Palm Beach.
The exciting, once in a lifetime show, which features all the bells, whistles, sights, sounds and smells of the famous traveling sideshows of the 1920s and 30s, will launch its summer schedule on June 25 at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles with a stage outside a concert headlined by Bob Weir & Ratdog and The Stringcheese Incident.
In and around Ozzfest appearances, it will be at Emo's in Austin , Texas (July 12), Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas (July 13), The Intersection in Grand Rapids , Michigan (July 18), House of Blues in Cleveland (July 20) the Eastern Kentucky Expo in Pikeville (July 24 and 25), and Lucky Devils in El Paso (August 18) with more dates to come.
Curiosity seekers at all the events will revel in and be amazed as an array of incredible creatures and performers hit the stage, some of whom go by the names of Zamora The Torture King , Half Boy , The Wolf Boy (from Mexico) , The Bearded Lady , Lizard Man , Lucky Rich (a full body and facial tattoo performer), Angela Ryan (a burlesque queen), sword swallower and fire breather Tyler Fyre . There's also a performer named Stigmata who does suspensions with hooks in his back and knees. Last but not least and for the first time ever, you'll see the 8 th wonder of the world, Ripley's Headless Girl .
TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE
Beside the cast of performers inside the tent, The Bros. Grim Side Show is traveling with a few mindblowing “artists” who will be hanging out just outside, beckoning patrons to come on in: a two headed cow , a two headed reptile show and a real two headed baby . For the first time in the show's six-year history, there will also be a monkey taking tickets .
The Bros. Grim Side Show was conceived and produced by Ken Harck , a well-known drummer who's played with artists such as Nicky Hopkins of the Rolling Stones, Badfinger, and James Young of STYX . He's a lifelong circus/sideshow historian and collector who has amassed what is perhaps the largest collection of important circus artifacts in the world. While still continuing his musical endeavors—he is currently producing a new alternative rock artists named SHEMP—he has turned his passion for the circus and his spine tingling eye for detail into what is now a world famous attraction.
The Bros. Grim Side Show—which traditionally features sword swallowing, the human blockhead, western bullwhip feats, snake charmers, contortionists and electrical death defying stunts and occasionally live alligators—have made numerous TV appearances: The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, The Discovery Channel, National Geographic, Ripley's Believe It Or Not, The X-Files, The Learning Channel, Guinness Book of World Records, HDNet, Monster Garage and many more.
“As a true circus historian, I have been studying sideshows since I was five years old, and I can honestly say that there are no other real sideshows out there boasting the real freaks like we have,” says Harck. “Most modern shows are much smaller and perform in nightclubs and carnivals with one or two performers”. Often the public feels ripped off when they see that everything is phony. Most other attempts at this are overly modernized. Every element in my show is authentic and antique, designed to recreate the golden era of sideshows when the circus was America 's premiere form of entertainment. Our show has a 100 foot banner line and when you enter through the canvas threshold it's like walking into another realm, another dimension. I consider myself not P.T. Barnum reincarnated but definitely a student of his legacy.”
The Bros. Grim Side Show has long had an authentic 1920s calliope outside the tent playing that inescapable “Step Right Up!” circus melody, and next summer we'll add a 1905 Gavioli Fairground Organ dripping with gold leaf art nouveaux carvings that were popular around the turn of the previous century. The inside of the tent is resplendent with old- fashioned hand painted gypsy stages, a true wonderland complete with old fashioned string lights and flags and striped canvasses framed out with fringe and gold tassels. And let's not forget the sawdust on the floor! The show often carries a priceless traveling Death Art Museum for patrons to view before or after the main show with artifacts of everything from mummies to six legged goats and genuine headhunter artifacts.
“Because we are going on tour with Ozzfest, we're going full bore to present to people a show like none other in the world,” says Harck. “There's literally no way anyone will see a show of this magnitude anywhere else. Another thing that makes us unique is that we've successfully blended a new school of sideshow performers like the full bodied tattooed people with older, more traditional acts like The Bearded Lady. It's a nice cross section that makes for an unforgettable experience for all.”
For those patrons who feel like they've already seen it all, Harck has something to say: “Guess what? YOU HAVEN'T! Strange and odd things have been bubbling under politically correct society since the beginning of time. When we launched in 2000, the time was simply right to put on a show like this. Our performers are all world-class eccentric monsters whose aim is to surprise everyone. People in our tents faint all the time; we call those moments ‘falling ovations.'
“We're looking to become an extremely inane version of Cirque du Soleil aimed at a crowd who thinks they've seen everything but truly ain't seen nothing yet!” he adds. “I love to see the looks on their faces. In a jaded society, we're honored to rekindle the fire of imagination and quicken the pulse of every man woman and child. We've combed the Four Corners of the Earth to bring them the odd and the unusual, and if something doesn't exist out there, then it's our job to recreate it.”
