TO COMMENT THE OPRI OPINION:
We are in a "steamy" gym listening to Kobe Bryant speak, at the University of Hawaii on Saturday, October 4, 2003, a day later than when we thought we would be in that gym listening to Kobe give his press conference. All the media has flown to this island to hear Kobes words from Kobe directly. Even with the gag order in place, we are still waiting with bated breath for Kobe to speak. And, not surprisingly, he does. "Im terrified," he states. "Life has been pretty crazy," he mutters. "You go through something like this, and you realize how important your family is, seeing my daughter grow up....." Well, we all get the picture. It seems Kobe is intent on letting us all know how he feels about his terrifying ordeal. I dont know. Maybe its my lawyer instincts surfacing. I seem to think jury selection is on everyones mind, including Kobes, and Kobes putting his best foot forward. The translation goes something like this: Kobe: "Hey, no matter what you hear from now on, please just know Im a victim, too. Dont make me do any jail time. Think about what it will do to my family." Potential jury pool: "He made a mistake. Was it big enough to send him to jail?" I think its time to revisit that gag order, Judge Gannett. This is fast becoming a sad commentary on Kobe Bryant and his efforts to employ the medias assistance with his solo agenda. Its equally sad that, when his words are reviewed against the criminal case pending against him, his youth and societal "immaturity" to the realities facing him hang in a garish light of his most recent actions. It has become very apparent that Mr. Bryant has decided to "go it alone." His attorneys may be doing their best to professionally represent him in the courtroom, but they seemingly have little or no client control at this point. And this should be of major concern to them. What if the client control problem worsens? What then? Will they be forced to withdraw as prior attorneys have in other cases? Does Robert Blake ring a bell? These are serious concerns, and unless Kobe can rise to his responsibilities as a celebrity defendant in a high profile criminal case and control his actions [and inactions] and there are many instances to cite, namely the first press conference with his wife, high profile public appearances, including an awards show, flashy outings, expensive gift purchases for his wife, his late arrival to training camp after refusing to take calls from his coach, and now his most recent comments - the media may be facing an announcement in the near future from his own attorneys. Its very possible and very probable. Another, more disturbing concern is our in-depth view into Kobes own "publicly open" thoughts about how he views himself against the world. But lets be specific for a moment. Lets focus on his comments about his teammates inability to understand his situation. When he stated that his teammates "would never understand" his crisis, Kobe was telling the world, he had distanced himself from even them. Problem is, they are the only ones hell be hanging with for the next many months, and if he isolates himself from them, where does that leave Kobe emotionally? The answer is grim. If Kobe couldnt get out of bed and report to training camp with his teammates after a judge ruled against him on motions that would determine the way the preliminary hearing would be played out on October 9, 2003, what, exactly can we expect as trial approaches? It is time, now, for Kobe to deal with the stress of this criminal nightmare he faces, by allowing his attorneys to do their jobs, and for Kobe to do his. That includes...adhering to the gag order.

"DESTROY HER CREDIBILITY..."
Says Opri Excerpt from
CelebrityJustice.com: In less than two weeks, the country's eyes will once again be shifted to the small town of Eagle, Colorado for Kobe Bryant's preliminary hearing in his sexual assault case. The stakes are incredibly high, especially if the defense gets its way and the alleged victim is forced to testify. It is an experience that would be unsettling to say the least. Los Angeles attorney Debra Opri says the strategy for Kobe's lawyers is harsh, but basic. She says, "Destroy her credibility. Plain and simple, they need to show credibility so she can't show her face in public again. That's the goal." The goal is also to get a hold of the accusers medical records including those kept at clinic at the University of Northern Colorado, where the 19-year-old attended. They've also subpoenaed records from a rape crisis center. Both facilities are fighting to keep their records private. The judge, meanwhile, has yet to rule on whether he'll allow them in as evidence. Opri says the defense may have already helped themselves just by asking for the information. She says, "It raises the issue, why do they want the medical records? What do they know that we don't?" As for Kobe and the upcoming season, the Lakers fully expect him to play and his performance on the basketball court could be important to his case. He'll want to show that his legal problems arent affecting him. Opri says, "Kobe must come out with best greatest performance of his career. He can't suffer, can't show strain, and he has to concentrate on nothing but basketball."

CELEBRITY
ATTORNEY DEBRA OPRI TAKES ON *** "Los Angeles, CA -- Dec. 22, 2000 -- The wiry 7-year-old and her timid little sister did everything they could to protect themselves from danger. They watched over one another. They demanded to be together every waking moment, to sleep in the same bed. They developed a language of their own. It was a bond only a mother could break. Five days before Christmas 2000, their mother, LaShanda Crozier, and her husband, Davon Lewis, lost a court battle over back rent, virtually assuring the familys eviction. The couple took their girls home on a bus. Then, in the dimming afternoon, Crozier brought them back to the Los Angeles County Courthouse. She marched them to the observation deck, nine stories above the Civic Center. She perched the youngsters on a granite rail. And then she pushed them." The preceding excerpt from LittlestAngels.net details the most horrendous of many tragic events leading up to one of two lawsuits that high profile Beverly Hills attorney Debra Opri has taken on. Opri, whose celebrity client roster includes James Brown, whom she successfully represented in the much-publicized sexual harassment / wrongful termination / sexual discrimination lawsuit against the performer, has turned her attention to the murder / suicide of Crozier and her two daughters. The passionate civil litigator doesnt suffer injustice gladly. Shes suing the County of Los Angeles for wrongful death and negligent infliction of emotional distress. She is representing Davon Lamont Richards a.k.a. Davon Lamont Lewis, surviving husband of decedent Crozier, and sole surviving parent of decedents Breanna and Joan.
Opri states in measured speech that barely masks her indignation over the numerous violations of the County of Los Angeles, various foster care agencies, and of the challenge to childrens basic human rights. Yet to be determined is the dollar amount of the Davon Lewis lawsuit, as Opri asks, non-rhetorically, "What price do you give for two young children who did not have to die?" The wrongful deaths of Breanna and Joan are an all-too-accurate barometer of a maddeningly ineffectual and rampantly corrupt system. Another of Opris cases underscores these issues from within the foster care system. She is representing eight plaintiffs who were former employees of the International Foster Family Agency for Foster Care. Each blew the whistle on the top officials there, and each lost their jobs as a result. Opri states that these "whistle blowers" will provide shocking eyewitness accounts of fraud and abuse amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars diverted from children's foster care programs to personal use. In very real terms, the continued misuse of these funds in Los Angeles County is cheating children who have already been short-changed in life. And its not just happening in Los Angeles. Opri says it is a nationwide epidemic of catastrophic proportions. One reporter
succinctly described Opri as the Erin Brockovich of the foster care
legal fight. "I feel for the children," she says, "and
before they get totally lost, theres got to be someone out there
to say, 'The systems not working. Lets fix the system.
Children are our future, and in the foster care system, there are a
lot of children who are endangered."

LEGAL EAGLE TO THE STARS DEBRA
OPRI
PROVIDES INSIGHT IN ROBERT BLAKE MURDER
CASE
* * * She did
the impossible when she got James Brown off the hook – Could
she do the same for Blake? Here's what this savvy legal analyst has to say With the
glow of victory still burning bright, attorney to the stars, Debra
Opri, is assuming an additional role: the media's hottest young
legal analyst.
Armed with an ingenious defense strategy, an exceptionally high
IQ of 161, and an uncanny understanding of the public's perception of
celebrities, she did the impossible: the silver-tongued attorney, who
represented James Brown, successfully defended his case in the much-publicized
sexual harassment lawsuit against the performer.
"James Brown never won in court," says crack civil litigator
Opri, on how high the odds were stacked against her client. "He didn't want to go to trial; he was
so certain he was going to lose. It's a very interesting thing, because
no one expected this man to win.
No one."
As a result of this remarkable upset, celebrity attorney Opri
has fielded media requests for her perspective on other high profile
celebrity cases. Robert Blake, Winona Ryder, Sharon
Osbourne, Tommy Lee, and Jim Carey, to name a few.
Opri believes that, "People
pay attention to celebrities.
They give celebrities an added credential.
In many instances the celebrity may even be an obstacle. That was a big issue in the James Brown case. "
Regarding the Brown trial, Opri states, "It doesn't matter how
many cases I have in my career, I will be most proud of the Brown case
because it was labeled a loser from the start.
I was told regularly that there was no way we could win this
case with the witnesses that the plaintiff had – but we did, because
I used his celebrity." Sure,
Opri surprised herself, shocked the legal community and caught the media's
attention, but with her impeccable vitae and confidence-instilling track
record, getting Brown off the hook is right in line. Opri received her law degree from Richard
Nixon's alma mater, Whittier College in Southern California, made law
review, and runs a successful Beverly Hills law firm, Opri & Associates,
where she works extensively with film and television studios. Opri used her natural entertainment affinity
when a New York University undergraduate, carrying a heavy curriculum
load consisting of a double major in drama and film-TV, and a triple
minor in production, writing and business.
With a rare combination of visual appeal, air-tight credibility
and engaging eloquence, Opri is as polished and compelling in front
of the camera as she is in front of the jury, and offers a balance of
youthful sophistication with knowledge well beyond her years.
She is sought after for legal analysis and has appeared on Celebrity
Justice, Inside Edition, Court TV, and has regular
segments on local news stations such as Eyewitness News, KABC
TV Los Angeles.
After the magic she worked with Brown, she knows from whence
she speaks with regard to the Robert Blake murder case. "Unless there was an eye-witness who saw
him pull the trigger, I don't see how his celebrity is going to fail
him," she states authoritatively.
"People will give him the reasonable doubt if they can show that
there are other people who wanted her dead – and there were a lot, we were told. "
"With circumstantial evidence, as things start to unravel, is
the registration numbers on the guns, and the eye-witnesses who claim
that he was going to hire them to kill her," reasons Opri, who has experiences
in criminal cases as well as civil ones.
"I don't think circumstantial evidence will ever be enough to
convict a celebrity.
"There are three main issues that will be dealt with in this
case. It will be a battle of the reputations
[between Blake and Bakely], his celebrity, and taking advantage of the
burden of proof beyond reasonable doubt.
Her reputation may create a great out for Robert Blake in terms
of the reasonable doubt element," Opri strategizes.
"This will be the preeminent case on the burden of proof beyond
a reasonable doubt standard."
She also cautions against the temptation to compare this to the
O.J. Simpson case, pointing out, "These are different elements. This is not a race issue, and it's not
a gory crime; this is a premeditated murder execution style."
As much as Opri would like to name-drop her star-studded client
roster, she is bound by confidentiality agreements to keep mum. Suffice it to say that she is well qualified
to provide accurate and entertaining legal analysis to an audience looking
for insight.
