NEW YEARS EVE AT THE DERBY
with
THE SWING SESSION
* * *
Return To The Swingin’ Halcyon Days Of Hollywood Past

Originally conceived in 1929 by the legendary film director Cecil B. De Mille and re-opened in 1993 by Tammi Gower and Tony Gower, coolness has always been destined for The Derby. Coincidentally, the club is one of California’s first “air-conditioned” buildings. Utilizing the unique dome shaped design of the main rooms roof, water was pumped up to the top of the dome and then ran down the sides into a moat providing a novel climate control. It is this forward thinking coupled with a classy nostalgia that has propelled The Derby into the world wide spotlight for the past 9 years, and on the eve of its 10 Year Anniversary, The Derby serves up an unforgettable night of swingin’ tunes.

Hailing from San Francisco, The Swing Session is considered by many to be one of the tightest and most well-rounded swing outfits going. Dancers are sure to delight as 2003 is welcomed with tunes that will get the Lindy Hoppers hopping, the Swingers swinging and the hep cats and kittens jiving. Needless to say, no venue other than The Derby could play better host to the madness that will ensue and the energy of a New Year and an Anniversary will only add to the fire on the floor.

The Tiered Ticket setup that The Derby employs for New Years Eve should ring familiar to habituates and delight new initiates. Priced at $50.00, $75.00 and $100.00 each, the tickets provide entry to the club and various perks for each progressive level. (Details below) Once again, as in years past, guests at The Derby’s New Years Eve Celebration must be at least 21 years of age with valid photo ID. Set times, and full menu will be announced shortly.

When your reputation precedes you in a city like Los Angeles, it is not without reason. Restored in a manner that evokes a lush 1920s and '30s Hollywood ambiance The Derby has been building up to its 10th Anniversary for the past year by inviting a diverse weekly line up of musical acts from the hippest underground indies to the most driving house beats, from the heaviest of metal to the most polished big bands the country has to offer.

Through it all, The Derby continues to seamlessly blend the sepia toned glow of Hollywood’s past with the 21st century and beyond. In the 1945 film "Mildred Pierce" Joan Crawford remarked of The Derby’s famous ornate oval bar “People have to drink somewhere. Why not here?” Nearly 60 years have passed since then, but never have those words rung so true to so many people.

MONTHLY FEMMUSE EVENTS ARE CREATING A STIR
ON THE LOCAL CLUB SCENE WITH SPONSORS MANNY’S MUSIC, AMP REHEARSAL AND FANLIST

FEMMUSE CHRISTMAS SHOW WILL RUN THE GAMUT
FROM MELLOW ACOUSTIC TO SHREDDING METAL AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN

FemMuse is a Los Angeles-based female musicians network which was founded by Shredmistress Rynata, an award winning female lead guitarist who has played with Glamazon, a Los Angeles "Cyber Rock" band blazing new trails in the Rock Frontier. She was voted Best Female Guitar Player at the 2000 Los Angeles Rock City News Music Awards show. With the support of her FemMuse partners Eileen Carey and Kathryn Grimm, Rynata has put together a vital plan for the Hollywood scene: The reemergence of the Open Jam Night.

The FemMuse Showcases are held the first Wednesday of every month at The Derby and feature an evolving lineup of music from delicate acoustic performances all the way up to the heaviest metal outside of Detroit. Each night builds in intensity towards the Open Jam. For fans who would like to attend the whole evening a cover charge of $7.00 will apply, and for artists who want to participate and trade riffs in the jam, a cover of $5.00 will be charged. Music begins at 8:00 PM with the jam starting at 11:00 PM.

While FemMuse has a mission to provide a place for female musicians to showcase, network, share ideas and support each other they are by no means exclusive. The Derby events will be open to any musician who wants to trade licks and compare chops with the finest female musicians in LA. But beware: The Shredmistress has modeled her playing after such greats as Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. So you better come prepared to kick ass no matter what gender you may be.

Kristi Jo Ticehurst, an 18 year -old songwriting sensation, starts off the evening at 8 pm. Following are a slew of great acts including the "FemMuse Club" (a semi-acoustic jamboree featuring fellow FemMuse members [Eileen Carey, etc.] each playing a short set of their own originals), Kathryn Grimm (Jeff Buckley, etc., showcasing the new line-up of "KGB"), Eve’s Garden, Shredmistress Rynata (kicking off the "Shredfest" with several female guitar shredding guests), Karling Abbeygate and the Monks of Love and the "Trenchant Electronic Music" of Pseudocipher. The "FemMuse Jam" is scheduled to begin at 11:00 PM and is open to any and all local musicians.

The Derby Welcomes
Oversoul7
(feat. Founders of Supreme Beings of Leisure)
and Special Guest Man vs. Machine
* * *
Wednesday November 20th, 2002
Doors at 8:00 PM

Oversoul7 is the band created by Kiran Shahani and Rick Torres, formerly of Supreme Beings of Leisure. Now that SBL has split due to creative differences, founding members Kiran and Rick have reincarnated Oversoul7, an experimental fusion of hip-hop and electronica. The search for the right singer ended when they met Jailyn Matthews, singer and professional Ford model. The chemistry was immediate with the first recording, “Love Robbery” (in rotation on KCRW’s Brave New World). The songs that followed showed a diversity that respected the high standards that make this band so unique. Their eclectic style of blending electronica with pop sensibilities gives the band a broad audience appeal. You can hear them in an upcoming Kia automobile commercial along with being included in the upcoming Hum Compilation. Oversoul7 comes fresh from playing Mextravaganza in Los Cabos, Mexico performing live along with the likes of The Crystal Method, Cypress Hill, Jane’s Addiction and Roni Size.

Man vs. Machine, an urban hip-hop drum battle, is quickly building a buzz in California as hip-hop’s newest and most innovative project. The band is centered on its two founders and core rhythm section, electronic drummer, Scott Warren and acoustic drummer, T-Roy. Their live performances deftly incorporate both aural and visual entertainment that totally immerse the audience in intricate rhythms, driving melodies, and with the aid of guest artists, create new works of art during the show.

All of this at The Derby?

Just like the seasons, there is little doubt left that The Derby can change just as gracefully and in as many ways!

JUST ANNOUNCED
THE FOLD IN THE DERBY PRESENTS:
DRUMS AND TUBA (N.Y.)
THE SIGHTS (DETROIT)
THAT ONE GUY (S.F.)
* * *
EVENING OF FIERCELY ORIGINAL MUSIC,
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30 AT 7:00 PM ($7.00)

Hailing from New York, Drums And Tuba is far more than the sum of its parts. They pull from a variety of different genre encompassing rock, funk, punk and even electronica just to name a few. All the music is extremely rhythmic, with the drums taking front and center. The band also employs a lot of live sampling (nothing is prerecorded) using a variety of digital delay machines. For instance, a song starts with a riff and before you know it, it’s been sampled and been incorporated into the melody. With the addition of more live samples, the group is able to create songs with dense layers of sound. The tuba can lay down a bass line and then, with the use of a variety of guitar pedals and delay machines, play a swooping melody over the top of the ensuing groove. Needless to say, the band is not a gimmick.

Detroit, long famous for being Rock Coty, now brings us The Sights. Billboard Magazine hails them as a prodigiously young threesome bringing “A high-impact mix of garage rock, psychedelia, and pop," while Magnet Magazine urges us to think of them “as younger siblings to their hometown's wayback merchants like the Go, White Stripes, Waxwings and Slumber Party and you haven't gone too far wrong." Every note of their latest effort Got What We Want displays the band's catholic attention to the last 40 years classic pop and rock, reminiscent of The Zombies and Big Star, The Band and The Rolling Stones to mention only a few.

That One Guy…Think Zappa meets Primus with lyrics by Ween. Add one Magic Pipe and a healthy dose of …a magic pipe? Imagine, if you will, a massive plumber's pipe, six or seven feet tall, equipped with a long-ass bass string and a series of MIDI triggers routed to various sequencers and samplers. Now picture the top of the pipe elbowing downward, housing another bass string tuned to a higher pitch. Placed in front of the Pipe are two kick pedals that trigger drum loops, and surrounding the rig is an impressive array of effects pedals. That One Guy's music lies somewhere between the not-too-distant future and the long forgotten past. Combining elements such as funk, rock, jazz, and sparse electronica may get you an interesting sound, but filter those influences through certain minds and you get something totally original that can only be understood through experience.

THE FOLD PRESENTS:
CAROLINER RAINBOW (S.F.)
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE (Nagoya)
DEERHOOF (S.F.)

9:00 PM OCTOBER 24TH AT THE DERBY

$12.00 ADVANCE TICKETS available:

CAROLINER RAINBOW - 11:30 PM
"Caroliner Rainbow, a black light augmented band, was formed in order to portray the cabin fever and ergot poisoned hallucinations of early America, namely the 1800's. These tales of steam boiler explosions and blackwater fever are channeled thru the band from the lips of the nationally famous traveling bull minstrel named Caroliner. This bull was blessed with the gift of song, but was unfortunately roasted and eaten near the turn of the century. Caroliner is renowned for delivering an incredible live show, packed with irridescent dream-like (or nightmarish) props and amazing glowing costumes. It seems more "like an angry painting come to life" than a band performing." - taken from GAMH site

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE- 10:30
"A self-described "millennial hippy group," Acid Mothers Temple have been traveling the world, unleashing their particular brand of psychedelic bliss upon an unwitting public for four years. The group slowly built a name for itself, specializing in what Kawabata termed "trip" music. It's a meltdown of entire genres and movements-- drawing equally from French folk and Western psychedelia-- all re-imagined in a form intended to liquefy your brain...[and] evokes the theatrics of My Bloody Valentine and Spacemen 3. Acid Mothers Temple pride themselves on the drughead obsession of being "cosmic troubadours" in continual search for interstellar communication." - Luke Buckman - Pitchfork

DEERHOOF- 9:30 PM
"The trio of Satomi Matsuzaki, John Dieterich and Greg Saunier are old school; you can hear in their music the lessons they learned from vintage Bay Area weirdos like the late great Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 and Caroliner, and from the famously avant garde Mills College music program -- all of which have resulted in a great, eccentric band whose aesthetic is fully formed, mature and confident. [On record] Satomi's light, singsong vocal delivery (similar to Boredoms' Yoshimi, Blonde Redhead, Yoko Ono) careens from stereo left to stereo right, a dose of melody and almost j-pop sweetness that plays perfectly against the macabre repeating guitar lines and the great, unpredictable, muscular drumming. Sudden stops and starts punctuate eight minute songs against one minute collages of noisy audio squiggles. Much like the Thinking Fellers did, Deerhoof juxtaposes melodic passages against weighty, distorted guitar a la Sonic Youth; they rarely descend to all-too-easy verse/chorus/verse trad songwriting, yet amazingly enough the album is quite accessible. Experimental music that everyone can enjoy. Wonderful....perfection." - Aquarious Records

You are invited!

On August 28 at The Derby Carla Olson brings her unique style to the stage for a very rare and intimate performance of music from her Smile Records debut album “Ring Of Truth” set to be released on August 27, distributed by Image Entertainment. Combining John Fogerty-style, working-man populist politics with a grand, Rolling Stones-inflected bent for hellfire rock 'n roll, Olson manages to make both influences seem secondary, with a raw, growling irruptive vocal style that owes acknowledgement to no influence other than its own zeal and compassion.

We invite you arrive early for this unforgettable night of musical excellence so that you can meet this Los Angeles legend. An Industry / Media meet & greet will begin at 7:30 PM on the 28th, with time to chat and have a cocktail before the show. Smile Records has arranged complimentary entry to The Derby with your RSVP for the meet & greet, but should you arrive after 8:00 PM, simply mention that Smile Records and Image Entertainment have invited you and the complimentary admission will be extended to you as well.

Feel free to RSVP to Luck Media & Marketing, Inc. and arrange interview time with Carla by contacting us at 310-860-9170 or via email to info@luckmedia.com.

THAT’S YOU AND ME AND THE DERBY MAKE THREE TONIGHT:
BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY
PLAY TO SOLD OUT HOUSE AT THE DERBY
* * *

TRIBUTE TO THE CLUB AND THE CLUB OWNERS
WHO WERE THERE FROM THE START

New School Swing legends Big Bad Voodoo Daddy played to a capacity crowd at The Derby to extend their gratitude to Derby Co-Owners Tammi and Tony Gower. Tammi, Tony and their nightclub played an integral role in catapulting swing culture into a world wide revival when they began booking Big Bad Voodoo Daddy into a weekly slot at The Derby.

When emerging director Jon Favreau asked Voodoo Daddy to play at The Derby in 1996’s cult hit Swingers, things hit fever pitch. Both Tammi and Tony Gower readily agreed to the shoot as well and the rest is history.

After an extended absence from The Derby the men of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy took the stage and made it clear that they were there to thank Tammi and Tony for the years of support. They wished them only the best and then proceeded to prove that the Daddy and The Derby remained the King Of Swing.

THE DERBY WELCOMES BACK, FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY:
BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY
* * *
VERY SPECIAL NIGHT OF SWINGIN’ FUN AUGUST 14th AT 8:00 PM

The Derby, Hollywood’s perennial favorite watering hole, welcomes Los Angeles Swing legends Big Bad Voodoo Daddy back to the famous dome on Wednesday, August 14th. Tickets for this 21+ show will only be available at the door for $15.00 so come early.

In 1995 Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, decked out in pinstriped suits, fedora hats and spectator shoes, was already a staple on the underground Hollywood club scene when actor friend Jon Favreau, who hung out at the band’s Wednesday night appearances at the Derby, told Scotty Morris, leader of the band, “I wrote a movie. Are you interested in being in it?” Morris read the script, which, as he puts it, “was very much the sort of life we were all living. So we figured let’s just do this cool movie with our friends. We had no idea it would do what it did.”

And as they say, the rest is history. In the past 4 years Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has sold over 2 million records. In 1999 the band was invited to play the half time show at Super Bowl XXXIII with Gloria Estefan and Stevie Wonder to an audience in excess of one billion people. Even Presidents have shown allegiance to the hottest hipsters around. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy burned up the floor at a fundraising event for Bill Clinton, turned an Inaugural party for current Chief, George W. Bush into a swingin’ good time and impressed George W. Bush Senior at a party in his honor in Washington D.C. in 1999. One of BBVD’s favorite moments came in October 2001 when they were animated as guest stars for the 2001 Scooby Doo Halloween special.

Pioneers of the swing revival, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s legacy still reverberates across the oval bar at The Derby. The cutting edge attitude, as well as their famous class and style will surely electrify the house when they take once again take the stage August 14th. Recently the band headlined before 14,000 fans at the Hollywood Bowl, proving that not only have they got talent, but draw. So why play The Derby, which is only 1/50th the size of the Bowl? Long time friends and co-owners of The Derby, Tammi and Tony Gower were there when it all began. A fitting and loyal tribute to a vital part of Los Angeles culture.

TRAFFIC EVENTS BRINGS THE BEST HOUSE FOR MONTHLY
TRAFFIC SCHOOL

DEBUT SESSION TUESDAY AUGUST 6TH
CELEBRATES MOREHOUSE RECORDS RELEASE OF
GROOVE JUNKIES SINGLE “INSIDE MY SOUL”

The first Tuesday of each month, Traffic Events will be hosting a house lounge at The Derby, showcasing big talent at an intimate venue. No lasers, no glow sticks, no fur, just pure house music. $5.00 cover charge, realistic drink prices, and plenty of parking is guaranteed.

Traffic School kicks off with the Los Angeles songwriting and production team of Evan Landes, Parrish Wintersmith, and Chico Bennett aka Groove Junkies who may be one of the best kept secrets in the global dance community. Born and raised in New York, Detroit, and Los Angeles respectively, they have crafted a style that draws from their early influences of soul, funk, R&B, and jazz. In a addition to their writing and production skills, Evan is a veteran DJ, Parrish is a seasoned drummer and DJ, and Chico a multifaceted musician. Their productions are an organic soulful blend true to the spirit of house music. Intelligent, uplifting lyrics, pumpin grooves and great hooks are the main ingredients to the Groove Junkies sounds. Adding to that, vocalist Solomon Henderson will perform live with the Groove Junkies, adding a rich new dimension to an already bangin’ track sure to burn up the floor.

Also on the decks is Traffic resident Ecco the DJ. This emerging talent started out with nothing more than a single deck and a crate of dusty vinyls, Ecco discovered that he was not exactly the best dancer, and thought it was wiser to groove in one spot, that spot being behind three turntables surrounded by the sound that reaches deep down. So turn on the red-light, watch the cigarette smoke weave its plot, and listen to Ecco’s soulful and jazz riffed house music take over with its sexy decadence and sleazy lurid jazz.

Class starts at 9:00 PM sharp on August 6th, is only open to students 21 and up and has a $5.00 Registration fee payable at the door. Traffic School will continue on the first Tuesday of every month thereafter. Come check it out...you might learn something.

CAMERON DIAZ IS OH-SO "OISHI" AT THE DERBY

Cameron Diaz and her actor companions Jared Leto ("Fight Club," "My So-Called Life") and Jonathan Silverman ("The Single Guy") made the scene at the world-famous Derby nightclub in the Los Feliz area of Hollywood last Friday night. It was Fold night and the trio sashayed to the front of the stage when alternative rock band Oishi (Japanese for delicious) started their set. Very "oishi" herself, Cameron Diaz is no stranger to the Derby. She first visited the hotspot around the premiere of "The Mask," her career making hit with Jim Carey. That time she was there for a performance by Royal Crown Revue who were also in the film.

Electro, Retro, New Wave, Dark Wave, No Wave…call it what you want, but the decade that brought us the fall of Delorean and the rise of skinny ties seems to be back with a revitalized force. Fondly recalling the days of corporate bailouts and killer beats, The Derby is pleased to announce a new weekly beginning on Thursday July 11th that will feature the music of The 80’s in a fresh new light.

Decade: The Ultimate 80’s Nightclub brings together the many threads of disparate genre to weave a rich hit laced tapestry in the two rooms of The Derby every Thursday night. The $5 before 10pm / $10 after 10pm cover charge is friendly enough for the most jaded 80’s fan and the first 100 people through the door on opening night, July 11th, will receive a free prize! Did we mention cheap drinks and 80’s Visuals?

On July 11th, Decade celebrates it’s premiere with a very special live performance by 101, the Ultimate Depeche Mode experience in the main room while the Flashback Room pays tribute to The Cure, Siouxsie, Bauhaus, New Order and Joy Division. It doesn’t end there either…The 1980's Room will be in full swing with a tribute to Depeche Mode, Morrissey, The Smiths, Erasure and Pet Shop Boys. Both rooms will also feature world famous dj's spinning 80's Flashbacks, New Wave, Synthpop, Dark 80's, Industrial favorites & requests all night long!!!

INTERNATIONAL POP OVERTHROW HOLDS A GIRLS NIGHT OUT AT THE DERBY
MONDAY JULY 29 AT 7:30 PM
* * *
LINEUP SHOWCASES THE FINEST
FEMALE SINGER/SONGWRITERS AND POP BANDS:
Kristi Callan, Lisa Mychols, The Twigs, Wendie Colter, Wendy Ip,
The Trinkets, Candypants and Automatic Taxi Star

The Derby, Hollywood’s perennial favorite watering hole, welcomes the International Pop Overthrow into the room as they hold a rockin’ Girls Night Out At IPO on Monday, July 29th.

Long a standard for showcasing the finest in pop music, the IPO is held in Los Angeles each summer and has recently expanded it’s reach to Chicago and New York, exponentially adding critical acclaim with every stop. For the first time ever, the world famous Derby in Hollywood welcomes the festival in the midst of its fifth year. At last year's Los Angeles IPO, more than 140 bands came from places as close as next door and as far as Australia and Sweden to take advantage of the two-fold mission IPO offers: To give every worthy band who'd like to play their music in a festival atmosphere the chance to do so, and to bring pop music the attention it so richly deserves.

Girls Night Out At The IPO kicks off at 7:30 PM sharp and won’t let up until at least midnight. Look for details regarding a custom Daisy Rock Girl Guitar to be given away on the night of the show by very special guest to be released soon. The Girls Night Out at IPO is a 21 and over event with a cover charge of $8.00

Here is what David Bash, Founder of the IPO, has to say about the bands playing Girls Night Out:

Kristi Callan – 7:30 PM: A venerable songstress whose bands Wednesday Week and Lucky were extremely beloved. Callan is the possessor of one of the most beautiful voices in this scene. Look for a new full-length CD from her this year!

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/140/kristi_callan.html

Lisa Mychols – 8:00 PM: Many of you know Ms. Mychols' work as the main gal of The Masticators, and some of you have heard her wonderful Christmas album, Lost Winter's Dream. She's doing her own thing now, and based upon the songs I've heard so far, you'll really love it! She'll also have a full band for her IPO set, so look out! www.lisamychols.com

The Twigs – 8:30 PM: Twin sisters Laura and Linda Good are becoming well known around L.A. for their provocative, harmony-inflected tunes. Their disc, The Universe Tonight, is one of the best of 2001! www.twigs.com

Wendie Colter – 9:00 PM: This tunesmith combines mature songcraft with pop melodies in a unique, elegant way, as her CD Payday attests. She's also given quite a bit to the pop scene as the host of the monthly, L.A.-based shindig 3rd Thursday. www.wendiecolter.com

Wendy Ip – 9:30 PM: When I saw this New York lady (by way of Winnipeg) perform at a Los Angeles showcase, I was so knocked out I invited her to IPO on the spot! Her latest CD, Fan Favorites So Far, is ultra hooky in a non-simplistic way, much like Jason Falkner! www.wendyip.com

The Trinkets – 10:00 PM: One of the most original bands on the L.A. scene, as they weld surf and garage pop tunes to some of the most striking Andrews Sisters harmonies you'll ever hear, all done with tongue placed firmly in cheek! WiggliGirl@aol.com

Candypants – 10:30 PM: If you've been missing that Elvis Costello/Steve Nieve kind of thing, look no further than Candypants. On their self-titled CD, they combine tight, quirky rhythms with the kind of melodies that will make you swoon. Add the fact that lead singer/songwriter Lisa Jenio is the second coming of Ronnie Spector, and you know you have something truly special!
cookieopuss@earthlink.net

Automatic Taxi Star – 11:00 PM: Betcha never thought the city that truly never sleeps, Las Vegas, could boast a great pop band! Indeed they can, as their female-led brand of power pop will remind you of sparkle*jets U.K. Try 'em out for size; it's no gamble!

POPMANIA RETURNS TO THE DERBY JUNE 19TH
IN CELEBRATION OF TWO NEW SMILE RECORDS RELEASES:
5-28 HUTCH TURN IT AROUND

6-25 THE STAND REPLAY
* * *
LINEUP INCLUDES HUTCH, THE STAND AND CARLA OLSON

The Derby, Hollywood’s perennial favorite watering hole, welcomes Smile Records Revue’s Popmaina back to the famous dome on Wednesday, June 19th.

This time around Popmaina’s lineup will delight the powerpopster in everyone with performances by The Stand, Carla Olson and Hutch. These three powerhouses of pop come together to collectively celebrate new releases on the Smile label which will be distributed by Image Entertainment.

The showcase kicks off with Hutch at 8:00 PM, hot off the release of their Smile Records debut Turn It Around. Joe and his band will then receive the media and fans alike as the show takes an hour break. Next up is The Stand at 10:00 PM who will play the lush harmonies and complex lyrics that have gained them a loyal fan base and critical acclaim for their latest Smile Records release Replay, out on June 25th. Carla Olson then takes the stage at 11:00 PM to lay down the signature guitar licks and heartfelt songs that have driven fans wild around the globe for over 20 years.

About the bands:
Carla Olson was at the forefront of the proto-riotgirl scene when she formed legendary punk band The Violators and gathered speed when the Textones rose to prominence. Carla has worked with Mick Taylor, Ry Cooder, Don Henley and Bob Dylan over the years but the enduring honesty of her playing needs no names to qualify her as one of the greats.

The Stand Big guitars, big hooks and big grooves abound in their current Smile Records release Replay. According to Bradley Torreano of All Music Guide "The Stand is undoubtedly one of the premier power pop groups in 2002....good songs are hard to overlook, and with candy-sweet tracks like "Something About You" and "Everything I Say to You," this is one album that delivers them in spades"

Hutch brings heart, soul and plenty of power to each song they play. Frontman Joe Hutchinson is no stranger to the heartstrings. Joe is a descendant of the controversial Hutchinson Family Singers, whom were famous during the mid 19th century for singing out against slavery, and supporting other humanitarian efforts, including women's rights. This legacy is evident in the band’s Smile Records Debut release Turn It Around that delivers an honest, positive message that will remain relevant for years to come.

VICTORIA WILLIAMS Live at The Derby

VICTORIA WILLIAMS 10:00p -12a

ABOUT VICTORIA WILLIAMS
Label: Atlantic Records
"Despite a successful career as a idiosyncratic country-folk performer, Victoria Williams was perhaps best known as a songwriter -- thanks, ironically enough, to a tribute album recorded in her honor. Born in Louisiana in 1959, Williams taught herself to play the guitar while still in her teens, and soon began composing songs. In college, she joined her first band, the G.W. Korners. After spending some time on the road, she ended up in California in 1979, where she was a regular at Los Angeles' famed Troubadour Club's "Hoot Nights." After first returning to Louisiana with the intent of forming a band, she moved back to L.A., where she performed on Venice Beach and ultimately signed a recording contract which proved fruitless.

Soon after, Williams met musician Peter Case, formerly of the Plimsouls. Not only did they form an act together--a jugband-like trio named the Incredibly Strung Out Band--but the couple also married. Finally, Williams made her solo recording debut in 1987 with Happy Come Home, a collection showcasing her vivid song craft as well as her off kilter, squeaky vocal style. After the record was released, Williams starred in a documentary by the filmmaker D.A.Pennebaker. In 1989, she and Case divorced; a follow-up record, Swing the Statue!, appeared in 1990.

In 1992, while opening for Neil Young, Williams began experiencing a numb feeling in her hands which made it increasingly difficult to play her guitar. Upon visiting a doctor, she was diagnosed with the degenerative neurological disorder multiple sclerosis. The medical bills quickly piled up, and like many musicians, she was not covered by health insurance. In response, her manager began assembling friends and fans to record Williams' songs for a benefit album; the result, 1993 Sweet Relief: A Benefit for Victoria Williams, featured the likes of Pearl Jam, Lou Reed, Matthew Sweet, the Jayhawks and Soul Asylum, whose rendition of "Summer of Drugs" was the record's first single. Due to its all-star line-up, Sweet Relief far outsold any of Williams' own efforts, raising not only funds for her medical treatment but her visibility within the musical community as well. Additionally, the record's success enabled Williams to establish the Sweet Relief Fund, created to assist other musicians with health problems; in 1996, a second tribute record, honoring the paralyzed singer/songwriter Vic Chestnutt, was released.

In 1994 Williams issued Loose, a varied collection featuring duets with Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner and the Jayhawks' Mark Olson, Williams' second husband. A year later, she and her Loose Band released This Moment in
Toronto, a live career overview which also offered a handful of standards ("Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Imagination") as well as one new song, "Graveyard." Her fourth solo album Musings of a Creek Dipper was released in 1998. Two years later, (Williams) issued her strongest effort date with Water to Drink." ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

THE DERBY SPRINGS ALONG IN MARCH
THE FOLD IN THE DERBY PRESENTS…
ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE (NOGOYA, JAPAN)
THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 10

WITH: BLUEBIRD, QUIXOTIC (D.C.) AND MAQUILADORA (S.D.)
SHOW STARTS AT 8:00PM

At the forefront of underground Japanese music, Acid Mothers Temple is a unique psyche/rock group, a communal force creating heavy "trip-music" mixing distorted guitar, synths, violin, bouzouki and taiko drums. Acid Mothers Temple melts down genre into a swirl of psyche weirdness. Don't miss your chance to check out this performance by the Acid Mothers Temple, as they do not plan on touring through the U.S. again until 2004. <http://www.acidmothers.com>

Bluebird is a heavy rock band from Los Angeles. Bluebird has been busy putting the final touches on an 'ambient-esque" full length entitled 'Black Presence' and will be out in the Spring. They've also started pre-production on a 2nd full length, this one to be released on Dim Mak Records and will be out in late Spring/early Summer. And Bluebird will be flying...overseas this year to Europe and Japan. Word on the street is that they are pretty excited about all this to say the least.

SMILE RECORDS REVUE PRESENTS
POPMANIA AT THE DERBY
A FREE SHOW FEATURING HUTCH, SUPREMIUM, AND STEW
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, STARTING AT 9:00 PM

Los Angeles based Smile Records will be presenting some of the best emerging pop/rock bands around as Smile Records Revue Presents Popmania at The Derby Tuesday, February 19, starting at 9:00 PM. This 21/over event will be free for those who mention Smile Records at the door. Bands to be featured are Hutch at 9:00 PM, Supremium at 9:00, Stew at 10:00, and Hutch at 11:00 PM.

Smile Records was formed by musician/producer Tony Valenziano with a vision and focus on the re-emergence of quality power pop bands. And Smile recently got bigger with a distribution deal with worldwide company Image Entertainment, long recognized as the market leader in licensing, distribution and production of music video long forms and DVDs. Be sure to seize this opportunity to check out the latest and greatest Smile Records will be presenting to the music world.

First up for the Smile Revue is Supremium, a band that is quickly gaining the attention of critics and fans alike. Supremium has catchy, punchy style of pop rock whose album, Tales, inspired this review by Chris Morris of Billboard Magazine: "Anyone who has had a kick out of Fountains of Wayne and it's rockin' neo-pop ilk will be enraptured by this economically played and neatly composed slab."

Singer, songwriter, guitarist and leader of The Negro Problem, Stew, has come a long way as a true musical artiste, as he will feature his latest solo album, Guest Host at the Derby. Stew's style of pop is funky, chunky, and creates a lively atmosphere with always a message to take to heart. The album has received critical notice from Spin, Rolling Stone, and Tom Sinclair of Entertainment Weekly proclaimed Guest Host as the top album of the year! For more info, check out www.stewmusic.com.

Hutch, fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist Joe Hutchinson, is a band that has caught the attention of many power pop fans with their music, delivered with style, wit and sincerity. It is pop with passion and punch. To get more of the Hutch-Touch, check out www.hutchworks.net. Come get a taste of popmania at the Derby and leave with a smile!
