FRANK BLACK TO KEYNOTE 2004 DIY CONVENTION LOS ANGELES (January 6, 2004) _ The fourth annual DIY Convention: Do It Yourself in Film, Music & Books has announced that its Feb. 5-7 event will be keynoted by alternative music pioneer Frank Black. INDIE STAR POWER ON DISPLAY AT THE DERBY ON DECEMBER 23rd * * *
THE DERBY
& LUCK MEDIA BRING TOGETHER TOP INDIE ACTS
FOR PRE-HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA
* * *
Critically
Acclaimed Eric
Anders, The Dre Allen Project,
The Derby and Luck Media & Marketing, Inc. have put together an extravaganza and holiday party with enough indie star power to light New York's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree on Tuesday, December 23rd. Critically
acclaimed Los Angeles singer-songwriter Eric Anders
will bring his soul-baring repertoire to the Derby stage.
Anders CD "NOT AT ONE" was named "One of the best
CD's I have ever heard!" by Derek Sivers, Founder of CDBaby.com.
Eric Anders, whose song "Halcyon Days" is a hit on
AAA radio, will be performing songs from his introspective
debut album as well as new compositions. This rare Los Angeles
performance is the end of the band's west coast tour.
A homecoming of sorts for Anders as he lives within a stones
throw of the historic Derby nightclub. www.ericanders.com The Dre Allen Project featuring Dawn Robinson of En Vogue/Lucy Pearl fame returns to The Derby as part of their "Grass Roots Road Trip" west coast tour. Named "One of Southern California's Top Unsigned Artists" by Music Connection Magazine in the December 2003 issue, The Dre Allen Project is an indie-music success story that continues to unfold and the man and his music are a testament to the strength of the human spirit. www.thedreallenproject.com Marc Seal, one of the top "Guitar Slingers" in the west and international guitar sensation with a fan base in over 40 countries, will plug in at The Derby for a high voltage set around 10:00 PM. The not-to-be-missed performance by this guitar virtuoso will show why Guitar Center has given their "Seal of Approval" on Marc for wildly popular in-store guitar clinics and on-line showcases. Marc and his solid band of top players will be performing cuts from his forthcoming CD. www.marcseal.com Oaklahoma City's The Stellas bring their 3 minute anthems of love, loss and longing to Los Angeles. The Sonic Blitz Records recording artists are fast becoming college radio favorites with their latest release Music For Umbrella's. The duo consists of Rachel Duncan's sweet vocal and shredding guitar work, tempered with John London's drumming and programming. Don't compare them to The Donna's or the White Stripes as this is tastier than what the deep-pocketed labels are producing as of late. www.thestellasloveyou.com Though
Spaceshot may be a relatively new band on
the scene, its members are seasoned musicians. Hailing from
Long Beach, California, the trio has little in common with
the ska and punk genres most often associated with their hometown.
Instead, Spaceshot fuses a wall-of-emotion with a penchant
for melody and intelligent prose. www.spaceshotmusic.com.

KRISTINE
W (Los Angeles) - Pop artist Kristine W celebrates her new Tommy Boy Records CD release, FLY AGAIN at the legendary Los Feliz club, The Derby on Wednesday October 15. Her long-awaited CD is released nationally on October 21. A portion of proceeds from the event will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Kristine broke into the music scene in the late 90s with hits like "Stronger", "Land of The Living", and "One More Try." In 2001, while on tour singing her hits from her previous 2 albums, including the single, "Stronger," she was getting weaker and weaker. Plagued by night sweats, confused and bruised, she knew instinctively that whatever was wrong with her was out of her control. She began a battery of tests that led to a bone marrow biopsy and a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). During her treatment she lost many close friends who lost the battle to the disease. On September 11, 2001, she underwent a stem cell transplant, fighting for her life, while others in the World Trade Center were losing theirs. It was a harrowing experience for her. However, it was her music that proved to be a constant companion and inspiration to her during her months of isolation. It is through her music now, that Kristine W hopes to inspire others to fight the good fight and FLY AGAIN. Kristine has joined forces with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society along with The Derby in Los Angeles, to help benefit and bring awareness for the organization, which was a great resource for her during her illness. The Derby lost one its own, longtime co-owner, Tammi Gower, to cancer this summer. So this collaboration also pays tribute to the legendary Los Angeles club-owner. DATE:

Q&A WITH FILM EXECUTIVE PRODUCER QUINCY D. JONES III AND DIRECTOR PETER SPIRER TO FOLLOW SCREENING BEEF, the much anticipated film that deals with the urban war of words will have a special Los Angeles screening, Thursday, September 4th, 9 PM, at Club DIY (Do It Yourself) at The Derby nightclub in Hollywood. The project takes a definitive look at the deep and harsh world of high profile "beefs" among such rap artists as Jay-Z, Nas, 50 Cent, Ja Rule, DMX and others. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with BEEF executive producer Quincy D. Jones III (QD3) and director Peter Spirer. BEEF will be released on DVD September 30th via Image Entertainment. "The idea and motivation for making Beef came from being close with Tupac," says Jones. "We did a lot of music together, and when we lost him, I was impacted heavily. That loss inspired me to analyze other beefs in hip hop to show the very real effect these beefs have on the lives of the artists as well as their families." TAMMI
GOWER MEMORIAL TO INCLUDE PERFORMANCE Who: Royal Crown Revue, Tammi Gower Memorial friends, employees, musicians. What:
The Royal Crown Revue will perform at the Tammi Gower Memorial
at 6:45 PM. Tammi Gower, owner and founder of The Derby,
the trend-setting and world-famous nightspot in the Los Feliz
area of Hollywood, CA, passed away the morning of Saturday,
August 9, 2003, from complications of cancer.
TAMMI
GOWER Tammi Gower, owner and founder of The Derby, the trend-setting and world-famous nightspot in the Los Feliz area of Hollywood, CA, passed away the morning of Saturday, August 9, 2003, from complications of cancer. Born Tamar Ellen Chait on November, 12, 1951 in Los Angeles, Tammi died peacefully in the arms of Tony Gower, her husband, long-time business partner and best friend. Also with Tammi were members of her family. In addition to her husband Tony, she is survived by her brothers Jon Chait of Chicago, Bill Chait of Los Angeles and was the much-loved aunt of Jamie, Eli, Brittany, Meredith and Zoe. Tammi Gower launched The Derby in April of 1993 along with co-owner Tony Gower, turned it into one of the most acclaimed supper clubs in the history of Los Angeles. On April 11, 2003, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of The Derby and to recognize the major impact on the revitalization of the entire Los Feliz area, Mayor James K. Hahn proclaimed The Derby Day in the City of Los Angeles and also bestowed upon Tammi Gower a personal commendation for her outstanding accomplishments for the community. The proclamations were presented in a special ceremony by Tom LaBonge, Councilman of the 4th Council District of Los Angeles that includes Los Feliz. Tammi was very proud to make her home in Los Feliz and helped preserve and renovate her house previously owned by Our Gang/Little Rascals filmmaker Hal Roach. Mrs. Gowers crowning achievement and legacy is The Derby, located at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd. (at Hillhurst). The building was originally built by Cecil B. DeMille in 1928, was one of five original Brown Derby locations 1940-1960 and served as the exterior of Arnolds Drive In on the hit TV series, Happy Days, in the 70s. Prior to Tammi taking over the location in 1993 it was a run-down restaurant and the area had become terribly blighted. With a strong vision, creativity and passion, Tammi created a venue that brought back the glamorous glory days of early Hollywood, while insisting on a no-snobs atmosphere for her establishment. The new clubs rich retro styling along with the booking policy of she and partner Tony, soon attracted Hollywoods top stars as customers including Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Diaz, Bob Hope, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Lopez to name a few. Not to mention helping to launch the careers of innovative neo-swing bands Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Royal Crown Revue, by providing industry awareness, media coverage and a residency to develop strong fan followings. Top name performers that have also graced the Derby stage include Bruce Springsteen, Cheap Trick, Brian Setzer, Live, Roger Daltry of The Who and landmark artists such as Tex Benacke, Ruth Brown, Robert Gordon, Gene Vincents Blue Caps and Sam Butera. The Derby has been the location for numerous film and music video shoots including Swingers and Speed, and is a wrap party and holiday celebration destination for productions such as ER, MTV, The Grammys, Just Shoot Me, Charmed, Legally Blonde 2, to name a few. Tammis weekly free swing dance lessons brought back touch-dancing to a new generation and even led to many romances and marriages with wedding receptions held at (you guessed it!) The Derby. In its first 10 years, The Derby and events hosted by Tammi Gower have garnered significant media coverage locally, nationally and internationally by such outlets as MTV, Los Angeles Times, CNN, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, E!, Access Hollywood, TV Guide, Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Glamour, The Food Network and is even listed as a "must see" Hollywood hot spot in international travel guides drawing tourists from as far away as Japan, Great Britain and Germany. Most of all Tammi Gower was a warm and generous friend to many and could be counted on for support in times of greatest need. She loved helping her friends, family, employees, customers and community and will be missed by all. A private cremation took place in accordance with Tammis wishes. Fittingly, a Memorial Service to celebrate the life and spirit of Tammi Gower will take place at The Derby on Tuesday, August 12, 5 pm to 8 pm and is open to all her friends, family, valued customers and business associates. Additional information available by contacting Steve Levesque at 310-860-9170 or steve@luckmedia.com.

DERBY Avalon is a monthly event spotlighting a variety of talented artists. Michele Bass, of Mystik Alchemy, approached Jan Tompkins, of United Divas, with the idea of coming together to showcase talents from both of their communities, with an emphasis on women and the female perspective. The event is hosted at The Derby is an amazing venue that provides 2 areas to feature musicians, DJ's, fashion, performance and visuals. THE PROGRESSION SESSIONS is held the first Friday of each month and is dedicated to bringing "The Very Best in Urban Music" to The Derby. It is this type of forward-thinking, top-notch booking combined with a classy nostalgia that has propelled The Derby into the worldwide spotlight for the past 10 years. Leading up to their April Gala Anniversary Celebration, The Derby continues to seamlessly blend the sepia-toned glow of Hollywoods past with the 21st century and beyond. In the 1945 film "Mildred Pierce" Joan Crawford remarked of The Derbys famous ornate oval bar "People have to drink somewhere. Why not here?" Nearly 60 years have passed since then, but never have those words rung so true to so many people. Friday

It was the location for "Happy Days" Arnolds in the 70s. Where Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Carol Lombard, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields and others who made Hollywood once stood, now stands Mel Gibson, George Clooney, Nicholas Cage, Heath Ledger, Uma Thurman, Edward Norton, Keanu Reeves, The Edge, Jack Nicholson, Robert Duval, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Kevin Spacey and Julia Roberts. MOBY SURFACES...at The Derby in Hollywood. The techno / electronica master joined spoof crooning nouveau loungesters René Risqué & The Art Lovers on stage during their outrageous set this Friday past, as an appreciative audience swooned where they stood. Celebrities are as common under the landmark dome, which fetes its 10th anniversary on April 11, as the world famous martinis that cross the antique oval bar. Kevin Spacey found time in the frenzy of his new film, The United States of Leland, to chill in the Derby's pressure-free ambience as he caught 40 Foot Echo's larger-than-life performance, while Aussie heartthrob Heath Ledger made the very happening Sunday night scene there. Moby, Spacey and Ledger are only the most recent three to park it at the posh-yet-casual club. Because of its equal opportunity fun policy, The Derby has been a natural celebrity magnet throughout its auspicious first decade, hosting Mel Gibson, George Clooney, Nicholas Cage, Heath Ledger, Uma Thurman, Edward Norton, Keanu Reeves, The Edge, Jack Nicholson, Robert Duval, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts and many others, right alongside regular folks, who can't help but feel like celebrities, too, as soon as they step inside the art deco club.

A TIP OF
THE HAT: For 10 glorious years it has been a point of pride for Tammi Gower and Tony Gower that they have achieved and maintained that illusive balance between Old Hollywood elegance and anti-pretense, and New Hollywood hipsterism and friendly fun at their world-renowned nightclub, The Derby. Which explains why these two dedicated and savvy entertainment moguls are celebrating the art deco hot spot's diamond anniversary when other club's typically close their doors after a three-year struggle to stay afloat. And true to form, with its "great music and friendly atmosphere" that Tammi Gower says have been her priorities since she and Tony Gower gutted and restored Cecil B. DeMille's 1927 domed landmark, Willard's Chicken Inn, The Derby is extending a decidedly non-elitist invitation to its sparkling 10th anniversary fete on April 11. Rolling out the red carpet and welcome mat to celebrity devotees, Hollywood scenesters, neighbors and international guests, all are invited to the house that swing built, and inhabit the dance floor with the Lindy Hop, the Jitterbug, and just plain dancing. Louis Prima's legendary sideman, Sam "The Sax Man" Butera will perform, personifying in standards and originals the 1930s and 1940s Hollywood glamour that inspired the equally glamorous Tammi Gower to pick up where the 1940 Brown Derby left off in the first place. The cover charge is $25 for this once-in-a-decade event, and each guest will receive a commemorative Derby 10th Anniversary limited edition t-shirt. Where Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Carol Lombard, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields and others who made Hollywood once stood, now stands Mel Gibson, George Clooney, Nicholas Cage, Heath Ledger, Uma Thurman, Edward Norton, Keanu Reeves, The Edge, Jack Nicholson, Robert Duval, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Kevin Spacey and Julia Roberts. They occupy the velvet draperied private booths and gather at the antique oval bar accented in brass and period lighting. It's this changing of the guard that most emphasizes what Tammi Gower describes as The Derby's "timeless and universal appeal." With an ear for talent and an eye for the exceptional, Tony Gower has given Swing the room to swing, and rock the space to roll. He has deftly expanded The Derbys weekly musical line-up to include the hippest underground indie bands, DJs spinning house beats, as well as classic big band sounds. He and Tammi Gower are proud to say that Moby, Cheap Trick, Live, Brian Setzer, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Roger Daltry and Bruce Springsteen have all performed on The Derby stage. With the advent of Doug Liman and Jon Favreau's revolutionary film Swingers, filmed on location at (where else?) The Derby, the club became the epicenter of Swing culture, and a natural sanctuary for nostalgia at its best. In fact, The Derby parking lot had been the site of "Arnold's Drive-In" on the enormously popular TV series Happy Days. With this historical lineage and Tammi and Tony's sixth sense for music, they have provided a unique forum for Swing, Big Band and other similarly classic genres that otherwise might not have found their audience. Their calculated risk paid off and paved the way to record contracts for neo-swing outfits Royal Crown Revue and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, who both developed their followings at the Derby. Because of it casual sophistication, rich history and landmark status, or maybe just because it's such a cool place, charities and television productions including CSI, Passions, The West Wing, Charmed, Just Shoot Me, ER, Judging Amy, Providence, The In-Laws, as well as recent films such as The House of Sand and Fog and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde, have all tipped The Derby for their wrap parties, holiday soirees and other seriously fun events. And now it's time to raise one of its famous martinis in a well-deserved toast: To The Derby a perfect 10. The Derby is located at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd. (at Hillhurst) in Hollywood.

Rounding out the world-class trifecta of indie talent are singer/songwriter Brooke Ramel and the hard-hitting melodies of Hypnogaja. Both had their music featured in major release films and all over network television. They will be joined by three winners from the DIY Music Festival competition categories. Adding to the musical excitement in the main room, there will be an extensive exhibit area, providing the local music community an opportunity to make great new contacts and solidify their networks in a focused, friendly environment.

In addition to singing, and acting in films -- including White of Winter, which made its World Premiere at this years Sundance Film Festival -- Zoe is also an accomplished film composer, having scored such films as John Waters Cecil B. THE DERBY
HOSTS
The Line-up:
Music in Television and Film: everyone hears it. Without it, our favorite shows would be less memorable and quite flat, but who are these people who lend their songs to shows like Dawsons Creek or Sex and the City? Quite often the artists get buried underneath the popularity of a show, even though they play an integral part in that popularity. This year the DIY Convention in conjunction with Pen Music and The Derby aims to change that by presenting the DIY Music Festival: Indie Music In Film and Television on February 6th.
Sharing top billing are singer/songwriter Brooke Ramel and the Los Angeles based rock band Hypnogaja.
