GEMZ ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND :
MIAMI BASED TWEEN VOCAL POWERHOUSES SHOW THEIR TRUE COLORS ON ‘BLUE IS FOR GIRLS,' SET FOR RELEASE JUNE 6
Everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Janet Jackson and Nicole Kidman has sung about diamonds being a girl's best friend—and that's cool with Samantha, at 16 the oldest member of The Gemz who claims that as a birthstone. But the old adage is getting a major makeover thanks to the hot five-member teen and pre-teen (thanks to youngest member, Sammi Jack, 11) vocal powerhouse group that's been wowing the crowds for the past three years.
With their inimitable blend of exciting vocals, vibrant personalities and a fully choreographed live show—not to mention that magic, intangible “it” factor--The Gemz have achieved something few groups their age have: being cool and cutting edge enough to win over their own generation, while also winning a fan base of parents who just can't resist them and the positive spirit they convey.
In just three short years, The Gemz—whose lineup also includes Carlie (15), Sarah (14) and Margaux (13)—have truly become role models for their evergrowing fan base. They have performed hundreds of shows in dozens of cities coast to coast. They've entertained audiences for both Radio Disney and trade shows; have been featured on several TV shows including "Wifeswap" and MTV's "PoweR Girls"; have sung at prestigious sporting events, charity events, malls, record stores and, maybe the most fun for them, summer camps across the Northeast.
The momentum continues this summer with an upcoming summer tour set to hit sleepaway camps throughout the Northeast as well as fairs and parks throughout the Tri-State Area (New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey). The Gemz are excited about debuting some of the sizzling new songs from Blue Is For Girls , their second album following a self-titled 2004 debut on StreetBeat Records, which is due to drop nationally June 6.
The title track, a true teen empowerment anthem for the current generation, and a cover of “Bop To The Top” (from the hit show "High School Musical") are already available for downloading at iTunes. “Blue Is For Girls” asserts that not all girls need to be pretty in pink, that it's important to be what you want to be and not let people influence you to be something you're not.
Overall, the Gemz music has evolved just as the girls have, yet the songs continue to offer positive messages of spirit, goals, friendship and of course, girl power.
“We have a lot of input into our sound,” says Carlie (birthstone: sapphire). “Our producers find the songs and show them to us, but if we're not crazy about them, we keep looking. If we connect, it's a go. Everything is a mutual decision. It's great to have this kind of input and work as a team.”
“Our favorite part of what's happening is getting out there and meeting all of our fans,” says Sarah (birthstone: ruby). “I think they enjoy our originality, and the way we bring a different perspective to girls and even boys our own age.” Samantha thinks the key to The Gemz' appeal is that “we have a wide range of ages, so there's someone that kids in each age group can identify with. “I'm right in the middle of old and young,” adds Margaux (birthstone: emerald). “What people like also is that we get along like sisters, and really never fight. We're there to help each other every step of the way.”
Sarah adds, “I think it's easy for fans to think every member of a group is the same, but once they get to know us, they realize we all have unique personalities that stand out. I'm the sporty tomboy, Samantha is a dancer, Sammi Jack is a real girly girl…”
Margaux: “And I'm the fashionista who designs a lot of the clothes The Gemz wear.” Sammi Jack (birthstone: topaz): “And the outfits look amazing!” Margaux: “Now, Carlie, on the other hand, she's the funniest one of us…”
Carlie interjects: “I like to make everybody laugh. They call me the tour comedian. That's part of what makes this fun, I have the best time with the other Gemz, and we have formed such an intense bond. Plus, each of us just loves performing. It's really a great privilege to do what I love with four of my best friends! The other girls are amazing!”
Sammi Jack: “We just love being together in general. The summer tours are the best! We know a show is going great when the crowd is going wild. We want to bring a positive message to kids from 11-16 and even older, and want them to appreciate us as singers but also role models.”
Samantha completes her “younger sister”'s thought: “It's definitely a big responsibility for us, but we have wonderful role models ourselves in our parents, who we all look up to and who really encourage us. We love the fact that the parents of our fans like us, too.
“You know what it's all about?” Samantha adds. “We're The Gemz. We shine and each have our own unique qualities that we bring to the group. Our mission is to encourage the kids out there to shine on their own as well.”
