GUITAR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (GIT) WELCOMES BLUES-ROCK GUITAR VIRTUOSO JOE BONAMASSA FOR AN INSPIRATIONAL AFTERNOON CLINIC ON THURSDAY, JULY 31
* * *
The Popular Singer-Songwriter Has Been Named Best Blues Guitarist By Guitar Player Magazine’s Readers For Two Years Running
Guitar students and fans of rock and blues, get ready to be inspired—not to mention blown away by one of most acclaimed blues/rock guitarists in the world!
On July 31, Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) at Musicians Institute (MI) (www.mi.edu) in Hollywood is hosting an exclusive afternoon clinic by virtuoso and singer/songwriter Joe Bonamassa (www.jbonamassa.com).
Named “Best Blues Guitarist” by Guitar Player Magazine’s Readers in both 2007 and 2008, the 31-year old Utica, New York-raised musician and artist—a longtime committed supporter of music and guitar education--is internationally renowned for his fluid phrasing and post-modern fusion of electric British blues, traditional Delta Blues and rock and roll chops.
Since releasing his Tom Dowd-produced 2000 breakthrough album A New Day Yesterday in 2000, Bonamassa has received numerous raves over the years from some of the industry’s most discerning publications and tastemakers. Guitar One Magazine once stated that he “just might be the best guitarist of his generation.” Guitarist Magazine calls him “the New King of the Blues.” Gibson.com echoes, “Right now, there’s no better blues-rock artist than Bonamassa.” Billboard has dubbed him “a bold talent,” while Mike Joyce of the Washington Post made note of the “wicked guitar thrills” he offers.
Bonamassa is currently gearing up for the highly anticipated August release of Live From Nowhere, his fifth recording on his own J&R Adventures label and eighth overall. His previous release, the Kevin Shirley (Joe Satriani, Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin) helmed Sloe Gin (2007) featured more acoustic guitar than any previous album and spent more than ten weeks at #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart.
Shirley previously produced Bonamassa’s You & Me, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues chart in June 2006. At the time, NPR host George Graham wrote, “Almost four decades ago, British rockers who played bluesy guitar became the heroes on their instruments, people like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Joe Bonamassa carries on that tradition…Bonamassa is in every way their equal.”
By the time he was twelve, the guitarist was already touring with B.B. King, which led to opening slots for many other blues and rock legends, including Buddy Guy, Foreigner, George Thorogood, Robert Cray, Stephen Stills, Joe Cocker and Gregg Allman. Storied producer Phil Ramone once said of him, “prodigies come few and far between. I saw him take an audience apart.”
He launched his recording career in the early ’90s when he met Berry Oakley, Jr., son of the Allman Brothers Band bassist, and they formed Bloodlines, also featuring Robby Krieger’s son Waylon and Miles Davis’ son Erin. They released a self-titled CD praised for its hard-charging fusion of blues, funk, boogie and roadhouse rock.
Currently, Bonamassa actively serves as the youngest-ever member of the Memphis, TN-based Blues Foundation’s Board of Directors, and is the lead spokesperson for their highly respected Blues In The Schools program, which educates students nationwide about the legacy and influence of the blues.

"Wrecking Crew" Documentary In Free LA Premier Screening On June 28th

Free, Outdoor Festival-Style Screening Under The Stars Is Co-Sponsored by Musicians Institute
The Wrecking Crew , a revealing documentary on the Los Angeles studio scene and stellar musicians who were behind much of the most influential music of the 1960s, will have its Los Angeles premiere on June 28th, 2008 . The film will play under the banner " Movies That Matter " as part of the free Grand Performances Program in downtown Los Angeles.
The Wrecking Crew features original footage of the rotating group of A-list musicians in the studio, including Musicians Institute (MI) co-founder, guitarist Howard Roberts , and early supporter Tommy Tedesco , considered the number-one studio guitarist of his era. Between them, the two played on hit records by artists such as the Beach Boys , Mamas and Papas , and Sonny and Cher , worked with platinum producers including Phil Spector and Herb Alpert , and dominated the film and TV soundtracks of the era.
The film's producer, Denny Tedesco , has held screenings at major film festivals including SXSW, Buffalo, Nashville and Seattle to outstanding reviews . Describing the LA premier, which is co-sponsored by Musicians Institute, Tedesco said, “This is a free, outdoor festival-style screening under the stars. You can bring a picnic, deck chairs, blankets and even white wine (they don't allow red wine as it can stain the granite in the Festival area). If a picnic is not your speed, there are some great restaurants in the area. Even though tickets are free, please make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to eat and find a place to sit. Don't forget a chair or blanket.
“We are also very honored to announce that the presentation of the film will be followed by a live performance by Wrecking Crew alumni Hal Blaine (drums), Carol Kaye (electric bass), Don Randi (piano) and Chuck Berghofer (upright bass). Vocals by Julia Fordham and other guest artists.”

Having Reached Rarified Territory As A Top Five Finalist On American Idol,
The Musicians Institute Voice Alum Rocks And Moves The Idol Dome With
Her Takes On The Neil Diamond Classics “I'm A Believer” and “I Am…I Said”
Last week on American Idol , Musicians Institute (www.mi.edu) Voice Alum Brooke White reflected the feelings of millions of her fans across the country with her heartfelt rendition of “You Must Love Me,” the Academy Award winning song from Andrew Lloyd Webber 's Evita.
This week, as a member of the rarified group of Top Five Finalists, she got personal while confidently tackling two classics from legendary mentor Neil Diamond . First, accompanying herself on the acoustic guitar, she buoyantly declared “I'm A Believer.” Later, singing and playing the grand piano, she boldly took Diamond's advice to change the locale of “I Am…I Said” from the original lyric “New York City born and raised” to reflect her Arizona roots.
Judges Simon Cowell , Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul all responded positively to her take on “I Am…I Said,” referring to her emotional effectiveness when she's in her comfort zone performing with the piano.
Fans in the forums on www.americanidol.com , rooting for White to make the Top Four, were overwhelmingly positive. One said, “One thing I really like about her is that she's SO REAL. She seems like the girl next door. But loaded with talent & looks too!” Another wrote: “She was AMAZING! I voted like crazy the whole 2 hours! She really deserves a spot next week” And, referring to her piano and vocal take several weeks ago on a Beatles classic, another Brooke believer added, “I Am…I Said' was awesome, best performance since ‘Let It Be' for me.”

MI’s Visiting Voice Instructors Ken Stacey and Windy Wagner Are Top Twenty Finalists in the Idol Songwriter Competition With “Only Love,” Which They Penned With David Walsh
Simon Cowell may have wondered where the beef was, but America found enough sizzle in Brooke White’s heartfelt rendition of Mariah Carey’s inspirational anthem “Hero” to make the Musicians Institute voice alum a Top Six finalist on American Idol.
Cowell said White’s stripped down piano and vocal version was “like a hamburger without the meat,” but the singer retorted that there are “a lot of vegetarians out there”; those vegetarians, along with millions of other fans of the charming, raspy Carly Simon/Carole King styled singer-songwriter, overrode the famed judge’s opinion and voted her in.
In other American Idol-related MI news, Ken Stacey and Windy Wagner along with co-writer David Walsh have reached the American Idol Songwriting Competition Top 20 with their song, “Only Love.” Wagner (k.d. lang) and Stacey are currently VIT visiting instructors; Stacey was also a regular instructor before leaving the staff to tour with Elton John.
To listen to “Only Love” and other American Idol Top 20 songs and register to vote (free of charge), check out the American Idol site (www.americanidol.com). Voting started Thursday, April 10th and runs for two weeks.

A Favorite Of Both Fans And The Show’s Judges,
White Will Join Her Fellow Idol Top Ten Finalists
On Tour This Summer
Musicians Institute voice alum Brooke White brought her bright smile and enough musical sunshine to American Idol’s second Beatles Night to earn her a coveted spot in the competition’s Top Ten.
By winning America’s heart with her earnest rendition of George Harrison’s “Here Comes The Sun,” the Mesa, Arizona native also secured her place alongside her fellow Idol top ten finalists this summer on the show’s annual national tour.
A check of the comments in the viewer forums on the American Idol website reveals the way the singer is capturing hearts across the country. One fan writes, “Is it her sincerity when she sings? Her beautiful, captivating smile? Her quirky, sweet personality? I'd have to say it's all of the above and more. She's the real deal, she’s super cool, and really connects with the music she is singing.”
Others echo the sentiment: “Brooke, thank you for bringing the sweet breeze of real music to this pop-heavy competition.” “I think Brooke is extremely talented. Aside from being a charming young beauty, her voice is impeccable.”
And: “I love everything about Brooke. Her voice is unique, she is a pure soul, and she seems like such a kind and humble person. Brooke is someone who I feel won’t let the spotlight change who she is.”
The previous week, White earned the praises of the notoriously hard to please judge Simon Cowell with her transcendent piano and vocal performance of “Let It Be.” He said, “I thought, Brooke, it was again one of the best performances of the night…a brilliant choice of song…three weeks running now…great!”
An exciting representative of the caliber of vocalists and musicians at the Hollywood, California based music school, White continues the exciting connection between MI (www.mi.edu) and American Idol that began with the success of Season Three finalist LaToya London.

Student Is A Top 11 Finalist on American Idol
For three weeks running now, the legendarily acerbic American Idol judge Simon Cowell has showered praises on Musicians Institute voice alum Brooke White. After her heartfelt grand piano and vocal performance of the Beatles classic “Let It Be,” he said: “I thought, Brooke, it was again one of the best performances of the night…a brilliant choice of song…three weeks running now…great!”
Cowell's compatriots Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul completely agreed, with Jackson admitting, “I'm a fan!” and Abdul adding “This is your niche.”
Cowell was equally enthusiastic in previous weeks. When White performed Carly Simon's “You're So Vain” during 70s week, he exclaimed, “OK, Brooke, I absolutely loved it.” After a stripped down version of Pat Benatar's “Love Is A Battlefield” during 80s week, he said, “Once again, two weeks running, you've done a great performance!” White accompanied herself on keyboard for “You're So Vain” and acoustic guitar on “Love Is A Battlefield.”
A shining example of the caliber of vocalists and musicians at the Hollywood, California based music school, White continues the exciting connection between MI (www.mi.edu) and American Idol that began with the success of Season Three finalist LaToya London.
MI hosted a viewing party for both students and alumni to support White while she appeared on last weeks show. The viewing party held at MI on March 11 was covered by the local Los Angeles Fox News affiliate.

Former Student Is A Top 24 Finalist On American Idol
Brooke White, a recent student at Musicians Institute's Vocal Institute of Technology (VIT), may soon be following in the star-studded footsteps of Kelly Clarkson , Fantasia , Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks.
Judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson selected the 24-year-old singer and keyboardist as one of the Top 24 finalists for the 2008 American Idol competition. Cowell compared her favorably to Carly Simon and Carole King .
Brooke's talent was also apparent while she was attending MI. “Brooke was an outstanding student,” recalled VIT Director Mike Campbell. “Besides being a wonderful person, she had an amazing work ethic and a great attitude. Working with her was an absolute joy.”
Chris Maloney, Brooke's program coordinator at MI, adds, “Brooke has that very rare combination of talent, image, drive and smarts. Even when she first came to MI at only 18, she had a maturity way beyond her years.”
White, a native of Mesa, Arizona who originally auditioned for Idol in Philadelphia, has already received a lot of airtime on the show and industry Idol-watcher reviews of her audition performances have been very strong.
Season Three AI finalist LaToya London , a successful recording artist currently playing Nettie in the Chicago production of The Color Purple , also fine-tuned her talents in Musicians Institute's Vocal Encore Program.

JUSTIN DERRICO
GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology) Instructor And Graduate, A Longtime Touring Member of Pink's Band, Performed At The Grammys With Tina Turner And Beyonce
On Sunday, February 10, over 17 million television viewers saw and heard the amazing guitar work of Justin Derrico as he performed onstage at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards with superstar Beyonce and the legendary Tina Turner. Derrico, a longtime touring guitarist with pop star Pink , is both an instructor at and a graduate of GIT, the Guitar Institute of Technology at Musicians Institute in Hollywood.
Moving to Los Angeles from his native Charlottesville, Virginia in 2002, Derrico did a six-month stint at MI; a week before graduation, he was recruited by The Calling, a Los Angeles band best known for their Top 5 hit “Wherever You Will Go.” When The Calling broke up for a time due to creative differences, Derrico came bounding back with another high profile gig working with contemporary soul singer Robin Thicke. Derrico played guitar on Thicke's platinum selling album The Evolution of Robin Thicke and co-wrote the track “2 The Sky.”
Then, through an exciting sequence of coincidences and auditions, the guitarist got the gig in Pink's band; for the first gig, he had five days to learn 25 songs before flying to Budapest to play for 200,000 people.

A SLICE OF MI HISTORY:
PRODUCER DENNY TEDESCO'S DOCUMENTARY PROJECT ‘WRECKING CREW' CHRONICLES LEGENDARY 60'S SESSION PLAYERS INCLUDING TOMMY TEDESCO AND HOWARD ROBERTS, GUIDING LIGHTS OF HOLLYWOOD 'S MUSICIANS INSTITUTE
* * *
The Eagerly Anticipated Film Has Been Selected For Screening At The Upcoming South By Southwest (SXSW), Buffalo And Nashville Film Festivals
Howard Roberts and Tommy Tedesco, world-renowned guitarists who contributed to the founding of Hollywood's Musicians Institute, are among the many L.A.-based session musicians profiled in The Wrecking Crew, a documentary film currently under development by producer (and Tommy's son) Denny Tedesco.
In recalling the golden years of the L.A. recording studio scene, Denny Tedesco tells the story of the A-listers who performed on thousands of records, film and television soundtracks that comprised a virtual soundtrack of ‘60s popular culture. Tommy Tedesco (who died in 1997) and Roberts (who died in 1992) were among the legendary players in the Crew who supplied the music for the Beach Boys , Phil Spector , the Monkees , Sonny & Cher , the Mamas and the Papas , Frank and Nancy Sinatra, and dozens of other pop icons.
In the era before home studios and sampling, the booming recording industry demanded musicians who could read and play any style of music on cue, and the Wrecking Crew filled the bill. Racing across LA from one studio to the next, the Crew could shift gears in a single day from rock albums to orchestral film scores to jazz arrangements to cartoon soundtracks, routinely turning out multiple finished tracks in a single three-hour session.
“The story of the Wrecking Crew is a picture of a unique moment in American musical history,” says Tedesco. “Like the musicians of Motown, Memphis and Nashville , these were the unsung heroes of popular music. They were as integral to the success of those records as the singers – most people never knew their names, but they knew their music note-for-note.”
The singers agree; Nancy Sinatra states, “I think they were the best musicians in the country, then and now. Brilliant technique, execution and feel…and they could READ!” In later years, Roberts turned his vast musical experience and educational philosophy into the foundation for MI's world-renowned professional music curriculum, while Tedesco and other members of the Crew appeared regularly to share their unique career perspectives in seminars and classes.
The Wrecking Crew has been selected for screenings at the upcoming South By Southwest (SXSW) (March 7-15), Buffalo (March 24-29) and Nashville (April 17-24) film festivals.
The documentary has received rave reviews at previous festival screenings, but wider distribution hinges on finalizing clearances for the dozens of hit songs included in the film. “We're in the final process of nailing down funds, “said Tedesco. “If there are investors, we're still taking calls.” To learn more about The Wrecking Crew, visit www.wreckingcrew.tv.

Meet With Faculty With Entertainment By Current MI Students in World Class Performance Venue
Musicians Institute, "The World's Most Innovative School of Contemporary Music and Recording," will hold an Open House on Saturday, January 26th, for potential students and their parents at the state-of-the art facility in the heart of Hollywood, California. Attendee's will meet faculty, tour the campus and enoy musical entertainment by curent MI students in the world class performance venue.
More than 30 years ago the Guitar Institute of Technology opened its doors in a rented studio space off Sunset Boulevard. GIT was the brainchild of music businessman Pat Hicks and influential guitarist–educator Howard Roberts, who teamed up to expand Howard's highly successful weekend guitar seminars into a full-time, one-year program. GIT's revolutionary curriculum was designed to provide students with the technical training, musical knowledge and practical experience needed for professional-level performance. Traditional classrooms were replaced by intensive hands-on workshops under the close supervision of some of the world's best guitarists. The idea quickly took off, and in short order GIT was joined by Bass (BIT) and Percussion (PIT) to form Musicians Institute (MI).
Today, MI offers Bachelor of Music and Associate of Arts degrees as well as the original certificate programs in guitar, bass, percussion, voice and keyboards, with additional degrees and certificates in audio engineering, music production, music video and film, music business and guitar-making. Facilities have grown along with the student population – now more than 1100 students per quarter – to include over 75,000 square feet of studios, performance venues, classrooms and practice rooms across several blocks in central Hollywood. Thousands of MI graduates are spread out all over the globe, working in every part of the music industry.

SHRUTI HAASAN
Soon To Release Her Debut Solo Album, Vocal Program
Grad and Daughter of Superstar Indian Film Couple Will Make Her Film Debut Opposite Matinee Idol
Madhavan In An Upcoming Tamil Movie
Musicians Institute vocal program graduate Shruti Haasan is set to make her film debut in her native India, starring opposite matinee idol Madhavan in an as-yet untitled Tamil movie scheduled to begin production in January 2008. The vocalist-actress, who graduated in 2006, is also preparing for the release of her debut solo album.
Shruti's motion picture debut carries on a family tradition begun by her parents, who are superstars in the world of Indian cinema. Her father, Kamal Haasan , is a three- time National Film Award-winning actor who has appeared in over two hundred Indian films. In 1990, he received his country's fourth-highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri, for his services to Indian Cinema. Shruti's mother Sarika is an acclaimed National Award-winning Indian actress who appeared in many classic Bollywood films and later became an award-winning costume designer.
Speaking of the songs she is composing for her upcoming album, Shruti says, “I center my writing around perceived reality and dreams because I feel that they somehow are less filtered and reflect raw thought. Each person in his own garden of thought (his own perceived reality or dreams) is in a more honest state of being than when he puts forth that thought to others or even addresses himself. These patterns are what I am trying to reflect on. My music has messages that are social and psychological but I haven't ventured into political opinions. The songs consist of simple layers that are human and also deeper layers for those who are interested.”

JEFF YOUNG
FORMER MEGADETH GUITARIST SET TO JOIN THE GUITAR INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (GIT) TEACHING STAFF AT MUSICIANS INSTITUTE IN JANUARY
Twenty-three years after graduating from MI's Guitar Institute of Technology, veteran rock and world music guitarist Jeff Young is returning to his alma mater as an instructor beginning in January, 2008.
After completing GIT in 1985, the Michigan native briefly taught guitar before joining Megadeth in 1987 to record and tour behind their platinum album So Far, So Good…So What! While Young found himself in the exciting epicenter of thrash metal, his own musical tastes extended well beyond that genre. After leaving Megadeth and immersing himself for several years in studies of classical, flamenco, gypsy jazz and other world music styles, he resurfaced in the late 90s with a new musical partner, Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist Badi Assad. His three-year collaboration with Assad (1997-2000) resulted in their dual recording Badi Assad – Chameleon , a #1 hit in Europe . The two opened concerts for such artists as Joe Cocker and Cassandra Wilson and performed at Lilith Fair in 1999 and Farm Aid in 2000.
In recent years, Young successfully fought testicular cancer and focused on completing his solo recording debut, Equilibrium, which will feature his work on flamenco, classical, six- and 12-steel string acoustic and electric guitars. The album is set for release in 2008.

Avenged Sevenfold Lead Guitarist-Backing Vocalist
Is A GIT Encore Program Alumnus
Since opening its doors in 1977, Musicians Institute has primed over 20,000 musicians, producers, engineers, vocalists and industry professionals for successful careers in every genre of contemporary music. One of the school's most inspiring success stories of the 2000s is that of 26-year-old Synyster Gates , who has been the lead guitarist and backing vocalist with Huntington Beach, California based metal/hard rock band Avenged Sevenfold since 2001. Following the release of its self-titled fourth studio album and smash 2006 world tour, the band is enjoying its greatest success to date.
Gates, who joined A7X after the band released its debut album Sounding The Seventh Trumpet , attended the GIT Encore Program in the fall of 1999 and again in the winter of 2001. He was enrolled (almost undercover!) under his real name Brian Haner, Jr. before emerging to rock and roll stardom as Synyster. While studying at MI, his diverse influences included Nick Seditious, Django Reinhardt, Adam Aparicio and Roddy as well as his father, Brian Haner Sr,, who still serves as acoustic guitarist on Avenged Sevenfold recordings.
After an extensive 2006 world tour that included dates throughout the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, A7X recorded its fourth studio album, a self-titled effort that was released on October 30, 2007.
Gates has won numerous awards, including the “Young Shredder” award of the year in the Metal Hammer awards in 2006 and the "Guitarist of the Year" Award for Total Guitar Magazine in 2006. He has filmed numerous guitar tutorial lessons for Total Guitar magazine.
The guitarist was also a member of the band Pinkly Smooth, a side project with The Rev (Avenged Sevenfold's drummer) and former Avenged Sevenfold bassist Justin Sane . Gates also has a newly released clothing line called Syn Gates Clothing. He has been sponsored by Schecter Guitar Research since 2004, and uses signature Avenger models.

MUSICIANS INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES STANLEY CLARKE SCHOLARSHIP
TO ASSIST DESERVING STUDENT PERFORMERS

The Legendary Jazz Bassist and Film Composer Will
Personally Select Winners at Performance on Tuesday, November 13
Always looking to push the envelope where new and exciting educational opportunities are concerned, Hollywood's Musicians Institute (MI) ( www.mi.edu ) keeps the momentum of its 30th Anniversary celebration going with the announcement of The Stanley Clarke Scholarship, an exclusive opportunity for student performers.
Established by legendary bassist and composer Stanley Clarke, the scholarship is designed to assist outstanding students of guitar, bass, drums, keyboards or voice with their financial needs while attending MI.
Clarke, a former member of seminal ‘70s jazz fusion group Return To Forever, is one of the most innovative bass players, composers and educators of the past three decades. Well known for his influential work on double bass and bass guitar, he has recorded over 25 albums, including School Days, which is considered by many to be one of the greatest albums by a bassist in jazz history. His current project, The Toys Of Men, is a musical exploration of the emotional sweep of war.
Clarke says, “My foundation's endowment to MI in support of the Stanley Clarke Scholarship came about because they not only teach music, but they were one of the first institutions that I came across that got into some of the peripheral things like legal affairs, engineering, music-related technology, and other skills that you need to round yourself out in order to go out into the world as a musician and be effective.
To qualify for the Stanley Clarke scholarship, students must be currently enrolled full-time at MI and have completed at least two quarters in a guitar, bass, drum, keyboard or voice certificate or degree program. Students must have maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA and demonstrate exceptional performing ability on their instrument as well as a serious commitment to music education (other details are available on MI's website). Finalists will be required to perform two selections (solo or with a band) at a live concert at MI on Tuesday, November 13, 2007. After the final performances, Mr. Clarke will personally select scholarship award winners.
Located just blocks from the Capitol Records tower, MI has an incredible history of innovation dating back to its origins in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which broke new ground as a performance-based contemporary music school taught by working professionals. Within a few years, GIT was joined by bass and drum programs to form Musicians Institute and the evolution has continued to this day with degree and certificate programs for career-minded guitarists, bassists, drummers, vocalists, keyboardists, recording engineers, independent producers, guitar makers, music business professionals and filmmakers.

On August 25, the City of Los Angeles honored the Hollywood based Musicians Institute ( www.mi.edu ) with a Mayor's Proclamation marking the day as “ Musicians Institute 30th Anniversary Day .”
Since opening its doors in 1977, Musicians Institute has primed over 20,000 musicians, producers, engineers, vocalists and industry professionals for successful careers in every genre of contemporary music. One of the school's most inspiring success stories is the dynamic, multi-faceted career of veteran guitarist (and all around colorful character) Jimmy Herring ( www.jimmyherring.net ), who since his graduation from MI in 1985 has enjoyed stints in numerous bands, both world famous and delightfully obscure.
Launching his career in the late 80s with the Atlanta based seminal jamband group Col. Bruce Hampton and Aquarium Rescue Unit—whose alumni include Allman Brothers bassist Oteil Burbridge--the Fayetteville, North Carolina native has since been a member of The Allman Brothers Band, Day By The River, Jazz Is Dead, Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh and Friends, The Other Ones and Project Z.
Known for his inimitable mix of slashing, jaw dropping licks and deep soulful feeling, Herring since August 2006 has been the lead guitarist for the Athens, Georgia based Southern rock band Widespread Panic. Many years after Aquarium Rescue Unit toured as the opening act for Panic, the 45-year-old guitarist replaced he replaced departing longtime member George McConnell.
Playing as many as 250 shows a year, Widespread Panic ranks among the top 50 grossing touring acts for eight years running, even without substantial radio airplay, television exposure, or promotion at retail stores. The band holds sellout records at Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver (23 shows), Oak Mountain Amphitheatre near Birmingham, Ala. (17 shows), Philips Arena in Atlanta (15 straight sold-out New Year's Eve shows), and UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans (18 shows).
Herring's fascinating life as a well respected, constantly working “journeyman musician” was recently the subject of a lengthy profile in early October on www.Idahostatesman.com , the state's #1 website for news and information; it was published in conjunction with Widespread Panic's show at the Idaho Center on October 8. Before delving into the guitarist's history, the article mentions two of Herring's most famous “replacement” gigs—filling in for legendary Allman guitarist Dickey Betts for a one nighter after Betts was arrested in 1993 (Herring later played with the band in the summer of 2000), and filling in with The Dead after the death of Jerry Garcia.
Herring's later resume features a lot of Dead offshoots, including being a member of (founding Dead bassist) Phil Lesh and Friends; The Other Ones (featuring four former Dead members, which evolved into The Dead in 2003-2004); and Jazz Is Dead, which performed fusion jazz interpretations of Grateful Dead songs; Herring's cohorts in Jazz Is Dead were famed bassist Alphonso Johnson, Dixie Dregs and former Widespread Panic keyboardist T Lavitz and renowned drummer Billy Cobham.
Joining Widespread Panic after the band helped Aquarium Rescue Unit so many years ago feels like “coming full circle,” Herring says. “It's funny to me,” he adds. “Because I've never done anything for the money. I've been blessed and got some great gigs. But I would have done them for a lot less money. It's a musical journey. I was just looking for a home, and sometimes it just doesn't work out for people. But I've never done any gig that I didn't want to do. In my entire musical life, I've never looked for a gig. These things keep falling on my doorstep.”
Musicians Institute (MI) is one of the best secret weapons in the music education field. Located in the heart of Hollywood , just blocks from the Capitol Records tower, MI has an incredible history of innovation dating back to its origins in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which broke new ground as a performance-based contemporary music school taught by working professionals.

Musicians Institute Will Be Holding An Open House For Prospective New Students
Musicians Institute ( www.mi.edu ) will be presented a Mayor's Proclamation marking August 25th as "Musicians Institute 30th Anniversary Day" in the City of Los Angeles. The event will be held in MI's main concert hall with doors opening at 10am and the proclamation being presented at 11am. Following the presentation, the school will be holding an open house for prospective new students. This open house will allow potential students to explore career opportunities in the music field ranging from contemporary music performance to audio engineering, music business, film, and more. The event includes an overview of programs, financial aid and the admissions process, followed by mini-lessons in each program area conducted by MI instructors at 12pm and a lunch and tour at 1:30pm.
Thirty years ago, in March 1977, the Guitar Institute of Technology opened its doors in rented studio space off Sunset Boulevard.
Today, MI offers Bachelor of Music and Associate of Arts degrees as well as certificate programs in guitar, bass, percussion, voice and keyboards, with additional degrees and certificates in audio engineering, original music production, music video and film, music business and guitar-making. Facilities have grown along with the student population – now more than 1100 students per quarter – to include over 75,000 square feet of studios, performance venues, classrooms and practice rooms across several blocks in central Hollywood. Thousands of MI graduates are spread out all over the globe, working in every part of the music industry.
