MI SUCCESS STORIES

JUSTIN DERRICO

GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology) Instructor And Graduate, A Longtime Touring Member of Pink's Band, Performed At The Grammys With Tina Turner And Beyonce

On Sunday, February 10, over 17 million television viewers saw and heard the amazing guitar work of Justin Derrico as he performed onstage at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards with superstar Beyonce and the legendary Tina Turner. Derrico, a longtime touring guitarist with pop star Pink , is both an instructor at and a graduate of GIT, the Guitar Institute of Technology at Musicians Institute in Hollywood.

Moving to Los Angeles from his native Charlottesville, Virginia in 2002, Derrico did a six-month stint at MI; a week before graduation, he was recruited by The Calling, a Los Angeles band best known for their Top 5 hit “Wherever You Will Go.” When The Calling broke up for a time due to creative differences, Derrico came bounding back with another high profile gig working with contemporary soul singer Robin Thicke. Derrico played guitar on Thicke's platinum selling album The Evolution of Robin Thicke and co-wrote the track “2 The Sky.”

Then, through an exciting sequence of coincidences and auditions, the guitarist got the gig in Pink's band; for the first gig, he had five days to learn 25 songs before flying to Budapest to play for 200,000 people.

Since opening its doors in 1977, Musicians Institute has primed over 20,000 musicians, producers, engineers, vocalists and industry professionals for successful careers in every genre of contemporary music. Located just blocks from the Capitol Records tower, MI has an incredible history of innovation dating back to its origins in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which broke new ground as a performance-based contemporary music school taught by working professionals. Within a few years, GIT was joined by bass and drum programs to form Musicians Institute and the evolution has continued to this day with degree and certificate programs for career-minded guitarists, bassists, drummers, vocalists, keyboardists, recording engineers, independent producers, guitar makers, music business professionals and filmmakers.

MUSICIANS INSTITUTE And HAL LEONARD Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary of Publishing Collaboration

2007 marks ten years since the founding of Musicians Institute Press, the publishing collaboration between MI and Hal Leonard Corporation, the world's largest publisher of print music. MI Press was created in order to put MI-style educational materials in the hands of musicians around the world, and publications are divided into four categories: “Essential Concepts” (based on various programs' core curriculum), “Master Classes” (content from elective courses); “Private Lessons” (“one-on-one” lessons with MI faculty instructors); and “Videos” (in-depth lessons on DVD).

Founded in 1977, Musicians Institute has long been recognized as one of the world's premier colleges of contemporary music; intense, hands-on degree programs designed and taught by top-notch working professional musicians are available for guitarists, bassists, percussionists, vocalists, keyboardists, and musicians into recording, luthiery, film scoring and the music business.

In 1997, Hal Leonard Corporation, the world's largest and most innovative music print publisher, created the Musicians Institute Press imprint to exclusively publish books, book/CD packs and DVDs from these acclaimed educators. Prior to that, MI professors authored books and lessons through various publishers, but none of these were sanctioned by the school. The first book branded with the Musicians Institute Press imprint was Rock Lead Basics for Guitar and remains among the bestsellers. Other top-selling titles include Harmony & Theory, Vocal Technique, Ear Training, Guitar Soloing, Bass Fretboard Basics, Double Bass Drumming and Salsa Hanon. There are currently more than 100 titles in the line with more being added regularly, and combined sales have surpassed over a million units.

Comments Hal Leonard Vice President of Pop & Standard Publications Jeff Schroedl, “We're very proud to serve as the official publisher for Musicians Institute. For countless musicians, attending MI is a lifelong, but unattainable, dream. We're pleased to do our part in making the unsurpassed curriculum from this school available to these students of music.”

Keith Wyatt, Vice President of Programs for MI, says, “We're elated to have simultaneously reached both the 30-year anniversary of the school and this ten-year milestone with Hal Leonard. We knew from the beginning that Hal Leonard would be the publisher best-quipped to distribute MI Press on the widest scale, and we also knew that we could trust them to help us translate MI's unique educational style into print and video. We were absolutely right on both counts.”
More information on MI Press is available on-line at MI's own store, www.miswag.com .

Paul Gilbert

The Musicians Institute (MI) is extremely proud to announce the return of GIT alumnus Paul Gilbert . During the month of October, Paul will be teaching special private lessons for GIT students, giving them a chance to jam and gain up-close instruction from one of the most influential guitarists in the world of shred. Paul's most recent appearance at MI was the release party for his new instrumental CD, Get Out of My Yard.

Paul is widely considered to be one of the finest rock guitarists of his generation. Since graduating from GIT, his highly successful career has included CDs and numerous tours with Racer X and Mr.Big as well as solo recordings and best-selling guitar instruction videos. MI Japan recognized Paul for his exceptional popularity in that country by bestowing the title of "Honorary Dean". Now based in the LA area, Paul returns to share his tremendous technique and musical talent with the students of GIT.

Dean Brown

For more than twenty years, Dean Brown has been one of the most sought-after "A-list" guitar players for both recording and tours, with a credit list of over 100 major artist recordings (including four Grammy Award winners) and tours with the Brecker Brothers, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Kirk Whalum, Bob James, George Duke, and Billy Cobham, among others. At GIT, Dean teaches electives in Advanced Electric Guitar Styles and Advanced Ensemble Skills as well as weekly Open Counseling sessions. Despite its success in priming over 20,000 musicians, producers, engineers, vocalists and music industry professionals for careers in every contemporary genre of music— rock, funk, R&B, hip-hop, jazz, blues, and fusion, among others— MI is still one of the best kept secrets in the music education field. Located in the heart of Hollywood , just blocks from the Capitol Records tower, MI has an incredible history of innovation dating back to its origins in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which broke new ground as a performance-based contemporary music school taught by working professionals. MI's location is a key part of the equation, training students for contemporary music careers in the very heart of the contemporary music industry. One-of-a-kind facilities tucked just off Hollywood Boulevard surround students with professional tools and atmosphere including top-of-the-line recording studios, an array of project studios, dozens of workstations, HD editing systems, a 500-seat concert facility and a wide variety of performance stages, class-rehearsal rooms and practice labs.
