Musicians Institute Student Band to Open; Q&A Session with Atreyu to Follow
MTV Favorites and Orange County-based rock band ATREYU will be playing a private show at Hollywood's Musicians Institute on Friday, January 12th at 8pm with a Q&A to follow. Student band Stella Vicarious ( www.myspace.com/stellvicarious ) will be opening for Atreyu at 6:45pm.
Atreyu exploded out of Orange County in 2002. Previously unknown to the rest of the world, the band released their stunning debut album, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses, grabbing the attention of a wide spectrum of music fans by demolishing the barriers between rock, melodic hardcore and metal. The band's original, unique music hit like a lightning bolt in hard music circles, energizing audiences and redefining the hardcore sound Southern California was known for. Critical raves poured in from publications like LA Times, Guitar World, and Metal Maniacs, who commented, “…the Southern California five-piece brings new definition to overnight success.” Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses has scanned 230,000 units and shows no signs of slowing down.
Musicians Institute (MI) is still one of the best kept secrets in the music education field. Located in the heart of Hollywood, just blocks from the Capitol Records tower, MI has an incredible history of innovation dating back to its origins in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which broke new ground as a performance-based contemporary music school taught by working professionals. Within a few years, GIT was joined by bass and drum programs to form Musicians Institute and the evolution has continued to this day with degree and certificate programs for career-minded guitarists, bassists, drummers, vocalists, keyboardists, recording engineers, independent producers, guitar makers, music business professionals and filmmakers.

SUPERSTAR MANAGER AND MUSIC INDUSTRY VETERAN VICKY HAMILTON TO SHOP MUSICIANS INSTITUTE STUDENT CD'S TO RECORD LABELS
* * *
Former Geffen Records A&R Rep and Manager of Faster Pussycat, Poison and Guns 'N Roses, Hamilton Has A n Impressive Track Record of Bringing Undiscovered Talent To the Masses!
Superstar manager Vicky Hamilton possesses not only o ne of the "best ears" in the biz , but also the knowledge of what it takes to make it in the grueling music industry and a keen sixth sense for spotting untapped artists. With a school chock-full of budding talent, the Musicians Institute in Hollywood has retained this industry veteran to shop CDs produced by currently enrolled students to record labels.
Hamilton originally formed her own management company to handle up-and-coming bands including Poison, Guns ‘N Roses and Faster Pussycat, just to name a few. By 1988 , Geffen Records was so impressed with her track record that they hired her outright , and she remained with the label until the 1992 sale to Universal . Stints with Lookout M ana g e m en t/Vapor Records and Capitol Records followed, and i n 2000 Vicky's own Small Hairy Dog label produced June Carter-Cash 's Grammy - winning CD , Press On . After all other labels had passed on the original Carter Family member 's record (and long before the box-office success of Walk The Line) , Vicky knew that the music needed to be heard . D espite having no plans to start a record company herself , she formed the label, released the CD, and once proved that her musical instincts were on the mark.
In 2005 , Vicky formed Aesthetic V ( www.vickyhamilton.com ) , a new artist management model created in response t o the breakdown of the old music business paradigm . Intent on achieving success in this new , hard business climate, Aesthetic V transforms management clients into small business owners and partners in their own careers , s howing emerging bands how to build their own successful recording , touring and merchandising business es . Aesthetic V 's c urrent clients include Jack Dill and XO.
PRACTICING WHAT HE PREACHES

Lead Guitarist and Musicians Institute Director of Programs - KEITH WYATT
Currently On Tour With LA's Favorite "American Music" Band - THE BLASTERS
Lead guitarist of LA's "American Music" legends and Director of Programs at Hollywood's Musicians Institute , Keith Wyatt of The Blasters knows how to practice what he preaches. For over ten years, Wyatt has been touring and recording with the Blasters across the US and Europe. A graduate of MI's first GIT class, Keith helped design MI's curriculum and later served as department head of GIT before becoming Director of Programs. As a guitar education specialist, he has created over a dozen best-selling instructional videos for Alfred/Warner Bros (including Rockin' the Blues and Guitar Basics), books for MI Press/Hal Leonard (Harmony and Theory: a Comprehensive Guide, Ear Training for Contemporary Musicians and the upcoming Blues Rhythm Guitar), CD-ROMs for Play Music (Play Blues Guitar and Play Rock Guitar) and DVDs for Hal Leonard/Fender (Getting Started on Guitar) and has written columns and articles for all of the major guitar magazines.
Influenced by the likes of T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Big Joe Turner, Jimmie Rodgers and many others, the Blasters play songs of the working man's curse and rock and roll romance. Founding members Phil Alvin and John Bazz, with the addition of Wyatt on lead guitar and Jerry Angel on drums, are carrying on their hard-won legacy of one of the most credible and recognizable bands in Americana music.
The Blasters first started playing in the late 70's, hammering out burning rhythm & blues and roots-influenced rock and roll in biker bars in their hometown of Downey, California. It wasn't long before word about the band's searing live sets spread to Los Angeles, and the band carved out a name for itself in the city's burgeoning club scene. Along with X and Los Lobos, the Blasters became an LA favorite with their bluesy straightforward rock and roll style drawing fans across the board from punk to roots to classic rock music. Their debut recording on the small but feisty Rollin' Rock label has since become a coveted collector's item. Soon thereafter, they began attracting the attention of other record companies and came to international prominence with releases on Slash/Warner Bros. that included the classics "Marie Marie", "American Music", "I'm Shakin'", "Border Radio", "Dark Night", "So Long Baby Goodbye" and others. Their 2005 release, "4-11-44" (Rainman) continues in the same tradition.

Located In The Heart of Hollywood, ‘The World's Most Innovative College of Contemporary Music' Offers A Genre-Busting Range Of Instrument, Recording and Music Industry Programs Geared to Launch Real World Careers
Paul Gilbert

The Musicians Institute (MI) is extremely proud to announce the return of GIT alumnus Paul Gilbert . During the month of October, Paul will be teaching special private lessons for GIT students, giving them a chance to jam and gain up-close instruction from one of the most influential guitarists in the world of shred. Paul's most recent appearance at MI was the release party for his new instrumental CD, Get Out of My Yard.
Paul is widely considered to be one of the finest rock guitarists of his generation. Since graduating from GIT, his highly successful career has included CDs and numerous tours with Racer X and Mr.Big as well as solo recordings and best-selling guitar instruction videos. MI Japan recognized Paul for his exceptional popularity in that country by bestowing the title of "Honorary Dean". Now based in the LA area, Paul returns to share his tremendous technique and musical talent with the students of GIT.
Dean Brown

For more than twenty years, Dean Brown has been one of the most sought-after "A-list" guitar players for both recording and tours, with a credit list of over 100 major artist recordings (including four Grammy Award winners) and tours with the Brecker Brothers, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Kirk Whalum, Bob James, George Duke, and Billy Cobham, among others. At GIT, Dean teaches electives in Advanced Electric Guitar Styles and Advanced Ensemble Skills as well as weekly Open Counseling sessions. Despite its success in priming over 20,000 musicians, producers, engineers, vocalists and music industry professionals for careers in every contemporary genre of music— rock, funk, R&B, hip-hop, jazz, blues, and fusion, among others— MI is still one of the best kept secrets in the music education field. MI's location is a key part of the equation, training students for contemporary music careers in the very heart of the contemporary music industry. One-of-a-kind facilities tucked just off Hollywood Boulevard surround students with professional tools and atmosphere including top-of-the-line recording studios, an array of project studios, dozens of workstations, HD editing systems, a 500-seat concert facility and a wide variety of performance stages, class-rehearsal rooms and practice labs.

Located In The Heart of Hollywood, ‘The World's Most Innovative Contemporary Music School' Offers A Genre-Busting Range Of Instrument, Recording and Specialized Programs Geared to Launch Real World Careers In The Music Industry
Located in the heart of Hollywood, LA's own Musicians Institute announces the launch of a non-profit scholarship fund dedicated to providing financial assistance to needy students - The Musicians Foundation . Spearheading the Foundation's fundraising efforts will be music industry veteran Don Grierson . Musicians Institute provides education , creative development and professional training to students of guitar, bass, percussion, keyboards, voice, guitar -making , audio engineering , music production, music video directing and music business. O ver the past three decades , MI's diverse student body has included many who would go on to become some of the most successful professionals in the industry , including b and members and backing musicians performing with such internationally famous artists as Red Hot Chili Peppers , Weezer, Lindsay Lohan , Christina Aguilera , Pink , Korn , Nine Inch Nails , and dozens more .
But many MI students with equal potential are unable to complete their education because their families cannot afford the financial burden. Some must split their time between school and work yet still cannot make financial ends meet. The goal of The Musicians Foundation is to help these talented musicians achieve their education al and musical aspirations through scholarships that allow them to stay in school and complete their studies. These tax - deductible scholarships are awarded to students who show a genuine passion and commitment to learning and to furthering their careers in the music industry. The David Geffen Foundation , among others , has already made a generous contribution, and Foundation head Grierson has promised an intensive effort to publicize the fund within the industry, among alumni and to the general public.

John Williams emails to say, "Way back in '79 I came out from New Jersey to study. Graduating in the spring of 80, I moved back to the NYC area and went through a series of bands including The Planets, The HeartBeats, Ice Nine and finally The Cucumbers, a regional band that cracked college radio and early MTV. In 1989 with babies on the way, I got out of recording and touring and into the studio world. I worked my way up to chief tech of Skyline Studios in New York, then moved over to Sony Music Studios in '84 where I continue to this day. I am the Director Of Audio Technology, responsible for keeping all those plates spinning on sticks for 25 rooms....yikes! I value the education I received at GIT and it provided me with a good background for future studies."
Music Business
Cameron Porter writes to say, "I attended the MBP program from Fall of 2004 through Spring of 2005. Since leaving MI, I have begun working for the record label Plug Research handling publicity and A&R (we are featured in the August issue of XLR8R magazine as one of their "Top 25 Independent Labels"). I've also started my own publicity company, Breadwinner, where I handle Plug Research as well as several other labels and artists.
Without MI, I wouldn't have the knowledge and connections to follow through on these opportunities, and I'm grateful for what the MBP staff contributed to my education."
PIT Percussion
Kari Paavola relocated to London after graduating from PIT in 1998 with Outstanding Student honors. Since then he's been keeping very busy with recordings, DVDs, TV appearances and tours with the likes of Cinerama, Roxy Saint, Enrique Englisias , and Avoidance of Doubt , among others. Kari also endorses Zildjian cymbals and KUMU drums. Check out his website for updates...
Marc O Jeanrenaud , a 1983 PIT grad, checks in to say, "I was surfing on the MI website. It reminds me that, in 1983, I was one of your students - a time when the internet was not around. My story is far from being incredible, it's about a dream that became reality.
"I wanted to be a drummer. In 1983, no school in Switzerland had anything that would teach the foundation of what is required to be a modern drummer. [When I got to PIT], I did not speak one word of English, and I did not understand 10% of what my teachers were saying in class. To give you an idea, it took me 5 weeks to figure out the word "rhythm"....but I kept watching the vidéos in the lab over and over. I could tell that they were all good, and I could feel all the teacher knew what the hell they were doing. It was inspiring.
"I did not became famous after MI. Oh no. But I learned how to work. I managed to get involved and I never quit, following advice I got from [former PIT instructor] Steve Houghton. He was tough, and he kicked my butt in his own way. Graduation was just the beginning - gig after gig, I started to get better and eventually I got hired by a well- established band on the East Coast, Johnny Hoy & the Bluefish. They played blues and I loved blues and I still do. Two funny things happened with them - the first one was when we went to jam with a guy by the name of James Taylor somewhere in Martha's Vineyard (I think it was the Hot Tin Roof). I had no idea who he was (sorry) and told him I did not like his reggae version of "Memphis Tennessee". Everybody in the band told me I was mad to make such a comment, but James Taylor did not seems to mind, smiled at me and was really friendly. I had no idea he was a "Big Shot", so I kept on talking with him and we had a great time. Six months later, I saw him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson talking about a guy who talked to him in a normal way...I had the impression he was talking about the fool who told him 'that's not the correct way to play 'Memphis, Tennessee', mister'. The second event was at a private party: imagine my surprise when the guys in the band told me that the gig was for President Bill Clinton!
"When I went back home to Switzerland after school and a few years of paying dues on the road, things had changed in my country. I came back with a few CD's under my belt and a lot of gigs - even playing for President Clinton, who I always admired. I felt really strong. Two weeks after I landed back home I was hired to teach at ETM , the only modern music school in Geneva.
"I kept on playing gigs all those years until I became what I always wanted, so looking back I can say that PIT was something that shaped my destiny. I was around something very big, I met people, and I have nothing but great feelings about Hollywood and Musicians Institute. Yes, it's madness out there, but I never thought that one day I would pay my rent doing what I love. All the great musicians, all the clubs, all the madness around Hollywood was the best kick in the butt any young musician could dream of! Thank you for that." *********************************************

MI alumni don't just appear on the covers of music magazines, they fill the pages in between. Those who have passed through MI's halls before going on to achieve notable careers include Keb ‘Mo; Weezer guitarists Rivers Cuomo and Brian Bell; longtime Chick Corea guitarist and fusion giant Frank Gambale; Chad Smith and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, drummer Curt Bisquera (Elton John, Mick Jagger, Bonnie Raitt); guitarist Fred Clark (Chaka Khan, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder); guitarist/producer John Shanks (Melissa Etheridge); the late Jeff Buckley; singer Angela Ammons, and recently former American Idol finalist LaToya London, who has just released her debut on Peak Records.

In other MI news, many exciting things have been happening with Hiring Hall, the school's in-house industry audition showcase. Hiring Hall recently provided a chance for MI talent to show their stuff before two major recording acts. First, mega-metal icons Korn came through looking for a backing vocalist for their upcoming world tour. Following on their heels, Epic recording artists Fuel auditioned lead vocalists. The Fuel jury is still out, but the Korn audition paid off handsomely for former VIT, GIT and RAP student Kalen Chase. Kalen will be joining Korn for their upcoming world tour as a backup vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist and percussionist. The tour will take him across the United States as well as to Asia, Australia and Europe, and when not on the road, he'll continue his duties as principle composer and lead singer for the Los Angeles-based band Crucifix Doll, currently in record deal negotiations. Hiring Hall is overseen by Barry Squire, who teaches A&R at MI and is the school's unofficial Industry Liason. Squire has worked at Sony and Geffen in key A&R capacities.

The public is invited to support the school's Guitar Program (GIT) at this live showcase event which will feature 75 guitarists exposing the talents of the GIT graduating class of March 2006. Watch them strut their stuff as they prepare to leave MI and make their mark on the music world. The Knitting Factory is located at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard, just three short blocks west of MI. Despite its success in priming over 20,000 musicians, producers, engineers, vocalists and music industry professionals for careers in every contemporary genre of music— rock, funk, R&B, hip-hop, jazz, blues, and fusion, among others— Musicians Institute (MI) is still one of the best kept secrets in the music education field. Located in the heart of Hollywood , just blocks from the Capitol Records tower, MI has an incredible history of innovation dating back to its origins in 1977 as the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which broke new ground as a performance-based contemporary music school taught by working professionals.
The best measure of MI's success is the graduates themselves. The list of former students who have achieved success in the “real world” is long and colorful.
MI's international reputation as a leader in contemporary education is based on four key factors, implemented by the school's more than 120 pro instructors: 1) performance-based education, with practical, interactive instruction by working professionals in the classroom, onstage and in the studio; 2) intensive learning, including a fast-paced application-oriented curriculum that cuts quickly to the core of each subject; 3) an environment that encourages the expression of creative diversity and personal style; and 4) career development via programs that prepare students for the realities of highly competitive professions.

Plays Host to Remix Magazine's Remix Hotel event November 4-6

This three -day event will feature several panel discussions ranging from “Music for Film” and
“Women In Music” to “TV & New Media Technologies” and “Record & Radio Production in the Digital Age”
Musicians Institute will play host to Remix Magazine's first Southern California appearance. The three-day event , dubbed Remix Hotel, offers attendees free access to technology master classes, panels, demos and clinics focused on music production and performance for electronic and urban-music producers, engineers, musicians and DJs. The event has already been held successfully in Chicago , Miami , New York and San Francisco . Remix chose Musicians Institute as the ideal LA location because MI is home to students who are striving for careers in the music industry. MI's specialized contemporary music programs in audio engineering, music production, film and music business dovetail with event topics including “Music for Film, TV & New Media Technologies”, “Women In Music”, “Record & Radio Production in the Digital Age”, “How to Make Your Music Sound Great”, and “VJ's & DJ's: Breaking New Ground”.
"When MI started as a guitar school, recording technology was still in the hands of the professional engineer, " according to MI's VP of Programs Keith Wyatt. "Home recording technology and electronic music were in their infancy, and a musician was defined as someone who played a "real" instrument. In the years since, digital technology has brought professional-level recording to the masses, along with a host of instruments that wouldn't previously have been recognized as such, from the turntable to the virtual synth. As musical capabilities and definitions change, music education also has to change to keep pace. Guitar is still the biggest single program at MI, but many guitar players now produce their own recordings and create their own rhythm sections inside the computer. At the same time, MI offers recording programs that encompass both traditional pro studio and electronic music, and our keyboard program is less about the black and white keys and more about how they can be used to access a whole universe of sounds. For those who associate MI with a certain style or tradition, this event will probably raise some eyebrows, but for the students who are currently attending the school it fits right into what they're already doing."
WHAT: Remix Hotel Los Angeles
WHEN: Friday, November 4, 7–10 p.m.; Saturday, November 5, 12–8 p.m.; Sunday, November 6, 12–5 p.m.

Those who have passed through MI's halls before going on to achieve notable careers include Keb ‘Mo; Weezer guitarists Rivers Cuomo and Brian Bell; longtime Chick Corea guitarist and fusion giant Frank Gambale; Chad Smith and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, drummer Curt Bisquera (Elton John, Mick Jagger, Bonnie Raitt); guitarist Fred Clark (Chaka Khan, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder); guitarist/producer John Shanks (Melissa Etheridge); the late Jeff Buckley; singer Angela Ammons, and recently former American Idol finalist LaToya London, who has just released her debut on Peak Records.
MI has expanded far beyond its roots as an instrument performance school and now offers specialized programs including the Guitar Craft Academy , which trains a new wave of guitar makers and technicians for the thriving instrument industry; the Music Business Program, focused on educating aspiring industry professionals; and the new Film Institute of Technology, which brings MI-style hands-on training to music video and commercial production.
MI has also expanded academically. Instrument students now have a choice of earning Bachelor of Music and Associate of Arts degrees as well as certificates. The latest offering is an AA program combining guitar, bass, drum, keyboard or vocal studies with a Music Business emphasis to turn out graduates who can truly fend for themselves in a challenging industry.
“What sets MI apart from most of America 's standard college music programs is that we take contemporary music seriously, and we combine all of the elements of a contemporary music education in one place,” says Keith Wyatt, MI's VP of Programs. “We were training students in contemporary music back when it wasn't considered a serious course of study. Electric guitar was the first instrument we offered and it remains our largest program, but to this day, most colleges still treat it as a second-class instrument because it doesn't fit into the classical or traditional jazz repertoire.
“MI's programs concentrate on training students to pursue their goals as efficiently and competitively as possible,” he adds. “The original basic idea was to bring a vocational-style practical focus to a creative art form. We teach students to organize their knowledge and skills and offer plenty of hands-on experience to make it all stick. Aside from all of the classes and lessons, by the time a player or singer graduates from MI, they have had dozens, if not hundreds, of live performing experiences and have rubbed shoulders with industry professionals, world-class teachers and visiting artists. Recording and film students know the gear inside-out and have produced their own projects. Guitar-making students have made their own guitars. Music business students have had day-to-day work experience. It's still a tough business, but they leave here armed with something more than a dream.”
MI's location in the center of Hollywood is a key part of the equation, training students for contemporary music careers in the very heart of the contemporary music industry.
Summing up the ongoing mission and overall vibe of the MI experience, legendary bassist and film composer Stanley Clarke once observed, “What I really like about Musicians Institute is that not only do they provide an exceptional, hands-on music education, they also prepare their students for the many other things needed to go out into the real world and be a working musician.”
