Recently Voted The City's Best Bar And Lounge For 2007
By The Cable Show L.A. Nightlife, The Rainbow Is The Ultimate Afterparty Stop For Locals, Tourists, Conventioneers And Rockers Like Robert Plant, ZZ Top, Slash and Korn
It's official, folks. After less than two years in Las Vegas, The Rainbow Bar & Grill is so popular that it will soon announce a move to a new, larger and more exciting location. Las Vegas' premiere Rock and Roll hangout for locals, tourists, conventioneers and famous rockers since opening in June of 2005, The Rainbow has quickly outgrown its original spot on the corner of Paradise and Harmon, which will be closing March 25.
Owners Jerry and Bob Greenberg , both legendary music industry veterans, are currently in negotiations with a world class venue that would allow The Rainbow to offer a much larger slate of live music performances.
“The club without question has become the #1 rock and roll hotspot in Vegas, and we are eager to find a new place with a lot more room and parking availability that can accommodate this tremendous growth,” says Jerry Greenberg. “We're also look forward to giving our loyal customers as much live entertainment as possible, and a new location will allow us to do that.”
Aside from the incredible word of mouth business that has made The Rainbow the place to be and be seen, the club has earned incredible accolades from the press and other media. Las Vegas Weekly voted it “Best Bar Off The Strip.” Another tastemaking publication said it's the city's “best place to see celebrities.” Las Vegas Life's 2005 Vegas 100 issue chose it as the “Best Place To See Famous People After They've Been Drinking.” Recently, the cable TV show L.A. Nightlife selected The Rainbow as “Best Bar & Lounge for 2007 In Las Vegas.”
The Rainbow has also been featured on the VH-1 Top 20 Countdown and the network's Surreal Life Fame Games, as well as E! Entertainment's new Ryan Seacrest-produced show Paradise City.
Celebrities who have come to jam, hang, eat from a tasty and diverse menu and see Greenberg's eye-popping array of rock memorabilia include rockers Robert Plant, ZZ Top, Korn, Alice In Chains drummer Sean Kinney, Pantera, drummer Vinnie Paul and members of Smash Mouth, in addition to tabloid favorites like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.
The dynamic vibe at the Vegas Rainbow Bar & Grill mirrors the explosive synergy that would happen at Mario Maglieri's 35-year-old original Sunset Strip location back in the 70s and 80s when legendary rockers like Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, Guns ‘n' Roses, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Poison, Ratt, Cinderella, Marilyn Manson, White Zombie and Black Sabbath showed up.
The Rainbow on Sunset was always a favorite place for the Greenbergs to hang with all of the acts they worked with on Atlantic (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Foreigner, Genesis, CSNY, Eric Clapton, et al), especially after big concerts. Jerry and Bob Greenberg approached their longtime friend Maglieri a few years ago with the idea of creating a venture to open a new location in the desert.
The Greenbergs will be announcing the new location as soon as the deal is finalized.

LAS VEGAS RAINBOW BAR & GRILL HAS CROWNED THE SKOONERS THE WINNERS OF ITS "ROCK THE RAINBOW" COMPETITION AND LAS VEGAS' NEXT SUPERSTAR BAND
* * *
RAINBOW VEGAS HAS ALSO DISCOVERED ITS FIRST EVER "RAINBOW GIRL"
On February 16th, The Rainbow Bar & Grill in Las Vegas crowned the city's the next superstar band when its "Rock The Rainbow" local band competition that began in September came to a rockin' finish in front of a crowd of 1300. The last band standing out of an initial 16 was The Skooners, a rowdy young band of pop-soul misfits with a distinctive alt-rock bent, that battled Fortwentydaze in the final.
The Skooners will receive a proverbial pot of gold for indie artists: a professional recording session at the state of the art Studio At The Palms (located at The Palms Hotel and Casino), a showcase for the #1 band (and a shot at a record deal) with Sony A&R representatives and a Saturday night spotlight gig at the famous Whiskey A Go Go on Sunset Strip, which is located just down the block from L.A.'s Rainbow Bar & Grill.
And just as co-owners Jerry and Bob Greenberg were seeking the next Vegas based superstar band, the restaurant also searched for Stephanie Suce , the one lucky young lady who became the face of The Rainbow Bar & Grill by winning the “Rainbow Girl” contest.
Every Thursday between the battle of the band performances, contestants were asked to model in lingerie to be judged by Rothman and a rotating panel of music judges, and the winner from each night was asked to come back during the Finals to see who the new “Rainbow Girl” promo team would be and to also determine the first ever “Rainbow Girl.” The prizes include paid photo shoots for the restaurant's advertisements for a year; limo accommodations for the team and bottle service at various hotspots in Vegas; and the replacement of the Rainbow's current logo with the winner.
Judging both competitions were Nick Oshiro (Drummer of Static X), Craig Nielson (Drummer of Flotsam & Jetsam), and co-owners and “rock heritage management” Bob & Jerry Greenberg.
According to Rainbow Vegas' Director of Operations Steve Rothman, the “Rock the Rainbow" and "Rainbow Girl" competitions "brought back what the legacy of the Rainbow is all about…rock and roll and gorgeous women!”

Last Wednesday, LA's modern rockers Sugarcult celebrated a rock 'n' roll birthday at Las Vegas' Rainbow Bar & Grill . Sin City's Real Hidden Secret: Newly-Signed Intergalactic Records Artists
Jaggedy Ann
Are Coming Home To Rock The Rainbow Bar & Grill December 9th at 10:30pm
Jaggedy Ann, Vegas' own all girl rock band that was proclaimed by New Zealan's Pulp Magazine as “chicks with balls”, is coming home this weekend after an international tour. After rocking through New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines, the newly signed Intergalactic Records artists will be making a stop this weekend in Las Vegas, just one of a few shows in preparation for their debut album, "Boiling Point," that is set to be released in early 2007. The band takes the stage at 10:30pm this Saturday, December 9th, at the Rainbow Bar & Grill Las Vegas .
After winning the United States World Battle of the Bands in Los Angeles in 03', Jaggedy Ann represented the United States at the world finals held in New Zealand. In 2005, after meeting drummer of AC/DC Phil Rudd, the band signed with the label promoters of the world battle of the bands, Intergalactic Records. In 06' Rudd took the band under his recording wing as the girls recorded their debut album, “Boiling Point” at Rudd's Mountain Studios in Tauranga, New Zealand. The extensive Asian tour followed, with a highlight of the tour being a performance as the special American guest of honor at the Pulp Summer Slam rock concert for 30,000 screaming, hard core rock fans in Manila, Philippines.
Jaggedy Ann' s music is a mix of old school influenced AC/DC rock, combined with the heavy riffs and kick bass of newer bands like Shinedown, Clutch, and the Smashing Pumpkins. The band consists of Gayla Dawn on vocals, Leona Sharpe on guitar, Miss Claudia on bass guitar, and Holly on drums. Though Jaggedy Ann has already been halfway around the world, they are looking forward to coming home: “Las Vegas is an awesome town and it's an exciting time to be apart of the music scene in here,” say the girls. “Even Mr. Jerry Greenberg of Atlantic Records, who owns the Rainbow Bar and Grill, boasts that Las Vegas will soon be bigger than the L.A. and New York music scene.”

THEY'RE TAKING REQUESTS AT THE RAINBOW!

LAS VEGAS' LATEST SENSATION ACOUSTIC SOUL —BELOVED BY THEIR LEGIONS OF FANS AS A “COVER BAND ON STEROIDS”— TAKES OVER THE RAINBOW BAR & GRILL ON TUESDAY NIGHTS WITH NON-STOP FOUR HOUR SETS BEGINNING AT 10 P.M.
* * *
The Foursome With Three Acoustic Guitarists And A Drummer Consider Themselves An Acoustic Jukebox, Letting The Audience Custom-Pick Tunes From A Set List That Includes Classic Rock, Country, Blues, Rap, R&B, Hip-Hop, Oldies Folk, Bluegrass… And Anything Else They Like
As if Rainbow Bar & Grill wasn't colorful enough, it's now playing host on Tuesday nights to Las Vegas' latest and craziest musical sensation…a Cover Band? Well, more like a cover band on steroids, playing nonstop from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. with no—we repeat, no--bar or bathroom breaks.
Acoustic Soul , featuring three killer acoustic guitarists and a powerful drummer—all of whom sing lead--is proud to bill themselves as a live jukebox, building their entire four hour set around audience requests. Hal “Scotty Love” Savar, Jeremiah “Sweet Lou” Vaught, Karl “Smooth Vinnie” Henrickson and drummer Paul Campanella are only in their early 20s, but their encyclopedic knowledge of music knows no bounds.
Your pleasure is theirs: classic rock, country, blues, rap, R&B, hip-hop, oldies, folk, bluegrass, you name it, they'll play it. And if they don't already know it, they'll go for it by ear and make it up on the spot. Savar says, “If we know it, we'll play it, if we sort of know it, we'll fake it, and if we don't know it at all, we'll still smile and accept your money. Our set list is always expanding because our fans have diverse tastes, but we love being unique and getting the audience involved. No other band will play what they want to hear, when they want to hear it.”
Nobody's ever played your favorite songs like this before. Working by request, they'll put “Remix To Ignition” by R. Kelly in the middle of “My Girl.” Throw “Baby Got Back” into “Sweet Home Alabama” for the ultimate Southern Rock-rapfest. Then there's that cool free for all concoction of “The Joker,” “Here I Go Again,” “Angel” by Shaggy, “Wild Thing,” “Hang On Sloopy, a couple of Weezer snippets, Sublime's “What I Got” and “Feel Like Making Love.”
Rainbow Bar & Grill Director of Operations Steve Rothman says, “I guess what it is, is that the audience picks the songs and these guys can play it and sound just like the original band or singer. The Acoustic Soul guys are great. They look like hillbillies, but can play and sing. They are amazing.”
The most incredible part of the buzz gathering around these Tuesday night jams is that the current Acoustic Soul lineup has only been together a handful of months. But what eventful months they've been. A year ago, Savar was playing original material in a band and not making any real money. Inspired by the successful dueling pianos concept taking place at various casinos on the Strip—“people were tipping them to play snippets of their favorite songs, but they were mediocre at best,” Savar says—Savar called his old pal Vaught to move from Washington State to Vegas.
What began as a “dueling guitars” band quickly evolved into the more unique Acoustic Soul concept founded on the notion of being “the anti casino band.” Their first gig was the Bunkhouse Saloon on Fremont Street, and soon the group—which eventually added two other members--was playing the Emergency Room, Mickie Simms and other funky local venues. In October, Acoustic Soul brought the house down one night during the Rainbow Bar & Grill's Rock the Rainbow competition, and Rothman and his crew decided to give them a shot. They made their debut on the Saturday before Halloween and started their regular Tuesday night gig on November 7.
“When the Rainbow first opened,” Savar says, “I came in and loved it but I felt it needed some good live music, and we're really excited about the opportunity to be part of that experience now. Everyone who comes to Vegas wants to check out something that's different from every other show they've seen. You could come and see a thousand bands, but Acoustic Soul is the one that gives the audience a chance to create the show.”

The Restaurant's Eclectic Menu, Created by Head Chef Ernie Moore And Director of Operations Steve Rothman, Draws From The Legendary Cuisine Of The Original Rainbow On Sunset Strip, But With A Late Night Vegas Twist

Moore Lends His Southern Bred Culinary Sensibilities To A Mind-Boggling Variety Of Great Dishes, Including Melt In Your Mouth Baby Back Ribs, Chicken and Waffles, Monster Burgers, Sliders and A World Class Selection Of Designer Pizzas
Who knows what's hot and happening in Las Vegas better than Today In Las Vegas Magazine? The cool part about being the Rainbow Bar & Grill is that you don't have to hype yourself—you let tastemaker publications like this one just tell it like it is: “Tired of those stuffy restaurants and snobby upscale eateries? We are too! We need a place where we can really let our hair down for a change. And we found one, too. Join us, won't you, as we take a trip down to the Rainbow Bar & Grill.”
Word gets around quickly in Vegas, and the buzz just off the Strip from rockers, tourists, locals and conventioneers alike is, the Rainbow on Paradise is the coolest after-hours hotspot this town has seen in years. True to the legendary history and unpretentious, no snob vibe of the original location on the Sunset Strip, the Rainbow in Vegas is, as co-owner Jerry Greenberg puts it, “about rock and roll, great food and beautiful women.”
Rock N Roll? Check. There's no other place in Vegas you can walk into and hear Guns N Roses, the Stones, The Doors Audioslave and Korn on 15 video screens while enjoying the food and drinks.
And, hey, wasn't that Vinnie Paul from Pantera coming in at 4 a.m.? Didn't we just see Vince Neil and Tommy Lee at the bar? Was that the guys from Journey coming in for Sunday Night Live Band Karaoke after their gig across the street at the Hard Rock?
When rockers—and regular people—are hungry, the Rainbow is there till all hours to whet and overwhelm their voracious appetites Were those the guys from Smash Mouth who just came in for a bottle of vodka and some of the restaurant's world famous designer pizzas? And what was it that Alice in Chains drummer Sean Kinney was eating before he signed the Drumhead of Fame?
Probably one of those insane Monte Cristo sandwiches with the raspberry sauce and powdered sugar. Rockers love the Monte Cristo. And when they dig in to a hearty bowl of the Rainbow's world famous chicken soup—modeled after the Sunset location's recipe, with hearty white meat, zesty potatoes, zucchini and carrots—the late night soup experience suddenly becomes the desert's latest sensation.
And everyone wonders what kind of pizza singer Clint Holmes—a Vegas institution who plays the main room at Harrah's—takes home when he comes in. Is it the Filet Mignon? The Three Pig Pizza (ham, sausage and pepperoni or bacon)? The Hawaiian? Director of Operations Steve Rothman is from Boston, so he makes sure the Vegas Rainbow's pizza has a thinner (but no less tasty, naturally) crust than its L.A. counterpart.
Beautiful women? It's Hooters on Steroids! But the Rainbow's Buffalo wings are hotter (literally and figuratively) and have a barbecue twist, thanks to the Southern-bred sensibilities of head chef Ernie Moore . Working with Rothman, Moore—a true culinary genius who has been an institution in Vegas for years-- aims every night till the wee small hours to tantalize your taste buds. The menu draws inspiration from the Sunset Strip location, but creates numerous twists and extra treats designed specifically for the Vegas clientele and its till the crack of dawn lifestyle.
“My staff and I take pride and make sure the food looks good and tastes good and that the food service is presented right,” says Moore. “The secret to good cooking is a lot of love.”
Co-owner Bob Greenberg adds, “Opening the Rainbow in Las Vegas is one of the most exciting things Jerry and I have done with our careers since we got out of the record business. Many of the acts, managers, and attorneys that we met over the years know we own the Rainbow Vegas, so they visit when they're in town. At 2am in the morning, you never know who you're going to see eating our pizzas and veal parmigiana. We put our food up against anybody. We've had rave reviews from customers about our food, the atmosphere, and our collection of memorabilia.”
While all the items on the Rainbow's eclectic but manageable (no “War & Peace” length Cheesecake Factory menus here!) menu are available during hours of operation, dinner entrees are most popular from 5 p.m.-11 p.m. Chicken Francese, tender chicken breasts lightly sautéed with lemon butter and white wine sauce, is known as the Jerry Greenberg special, because its the Rainbow co-owner's favorite dish. A lot of folks like the Penne ala Vodka, lightly sautéed pieces of chicken tossed with penne pasta and vodka cream sauce. The menu also has a mean Teriyaki Salmon, Filet Mignon, out of this world homemade lasagna and old-fashioned spaghetti and meatballs.
Moore brings his Memphis vibe to one of the rainbow's true entrée highlights, the baby back ribs, which you can literally eat with a fork; the meat melts off the bone, and many patrons have raved that they have never eaten ribs this tender in their lives.
“Back home in the South,” he says, “we do everything slow. Ribs are our specialty at the Rainbow, and we cook them real slow. We don't rush anything over here.”
Appetizers, salads and sandwiches are fair game at all hours, starting with the wings, monster sized nachos, calamari, potato skins and sliders, aka four mini cheeseburgers that would make White Castle blush. Salads include brilliant renditions of a Cobb, Grilled Ahi Tuna, Asian Chicken and Caesar. The Rainbow is quickly developing a rep for being the after-party place in Vegas, and the sandwiches really keep the vibe going. Let the 8 oz. Rock Burger or Rainbow Burger attack those late night hunger pains. Or maybe try the Grilled Ahi Tuna Burger or Meatball Sub. The Monte Cristo, dripping with delight, is so incredible it bears another mention. Soon to appear on the menu will be a new Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. There's always something new and exciting happening at The Rainbow. If it's not AJ from Twisted Sister or Paris Hilton coming in or a Rock The Rainbow band contest, it's Buffalo sauced drenched strips on a massive French roll.
The real night owls know they can come to the Rainbow for a late/early breakfast, starting with Rainbow Eggs, a cheese omelette. a western omelette, pancakes and French Toast. Another favorite for people caught between dinner and breakfast is the soulful, “Roscoe's Style” Fried Chicken & Waffles. Pour that maple syrup on and get your day started right at 4 a.m. You can complete your sugar high with homemade bread pudding, homemade apple pie, a brownie sundae or Led Zepps—named after some old British band you might be familiar with—which are Italian donuts dusted with powdered sugar that you dip in a magical raspberry sauce. What Italian donuts have to do with “Whole Lotta Love” is anybody's guess, but your taste buds will be climbing a “Stairway to Heaven” the whole way.
“Ernie takes a lot of pride in the Rainbow Bar & Grill menu,” says Rothman. “Before we opened, he went around to a lot of restaurants and taverns to see what kind of food people were eating in Las Vegas, and then we sat down and focused on putting together a really strong, eclectic mix for all hours of the night. It's a menu that doesn't limit itself to any specific demographic, and that's what people love best about it. People are very visual, and the Rainbow offers an immediate feast for the eyes with its cozy interiors, gorgeous women and screens featuring rock and roll videos and classic movies. The Rainbow in Vegas has a lot of soul from rock and roll all the way to the food. We like to think of the great menu as the icing on that cake.”
Or on the Monte Cristo and Led Zepps.
Word on the strip: Rainbow Gig by Vegas-rockers Adelitas Way Draws almost 900 fans and results in record deal with Atlantic Records
The Rainbow Bar & Grill is quickly becoming the place to be seen and heard in Vegas on Thursdays. Last Thursday night approximately 900 rockers stormed the Rainbow to witness the culmination of Vegas-based Adelitas Way's 7 gigs across the city resulting in Atlantic Records signing the group to a record contract. Adelitas Way and Soul'd Out performed as part of the “Rock The Rainbow” local band competition, in which the best of the 16 competing groups will have their chance at many great prizes and opportunities. On hand to witness the frenzy was Adelita's Way mgr. Larry Rudolf, the former svengali for Britney Spears, G&R/Velvet Revolver guitar-slinger Slash, Las Vegas headline crooner Clint Holmes and Rainbow Vegas co-owners Jerry and Bob Greenberg. And Jerry knows a thing or two about hot bands, as the youngest major label president ever at Atlantic Records, he was responsible for the signing and marketing of super star bands such as Genesis and Foreigner.
Just as brothers Greenberg are seeking the next Vegas-based superstar band in that contest, the restaurant is looking for one lucky young lady to become the face (and body) of The Rainbow Bar & Grill. The "Rainbow Girl" contest has taken place each Thursday between performances in the “Rock The Rainbow” Competition, and this last week's was one of the most entertaining thus far.
Las Vegas' Rainbow Bar & Grill, which is located on Paradise Road across from the Hard Rock Hotel and Café, recently celebrated its first anniversary. Its relaxed, no snobs attitude and growing reputation as a new playground for tourists and locals alike has also attracted an exciting celebrity clientele. LAS VEGAS' RAINBOW BAR & GRILL Holds Contest For First Ever “Rainbow Girl”
Each Week Between Performances of Local Bands Competing In The “Rock The Rainbow” Competition

Prizes Include Paid Photo Shoots For Rainbow Bar & Grill, Advertisements, Limo Accommodations For the Team and Bottle Service At Various Vegas Hot Spots, And Replacement Of Restaurant's Logo With The Winner
Quickly establishing itself as Las Vegas' new, fun and casual must-experience spot for tourists and celebrity clientele, The Rainbow Bar & Grill is holding a weekly contest throughout the fall to find the first ever “Rainbow Girl.”
The “Rainbow Girl” contest will take place each Thursday (September 28-October 26) between performances by some of the 16 finalists in the “Rock The Rainbow” Competition. Just as owners Jerry Greenberg and Bob Greenberg are seeking the next Vegas based superstar band in that contest, the restaurant is looking for one lucky young lady to become the face of The Rainbow Bar & Grill.
Rainbow Bar & Grill Director of Operations Steve Rothman says, “This will bring back what the legacy of the Rainbow is all about…rock and roll and gorgeous women!”
The “Rock The Rainbow” shows are scheduled to start at 11 p.m., followed by the “Rainbow Girl” contest at about midnight. Contestants will be asked to model in lingerie to be judged by Rothman and a rotating panel of music judges; some of the celebrities on the panel include Carey Hart, Vinny Paul (Pantera), A.J. Vero (Twisted Sister), Nick Ishiro (Static X), Craig Neilson (Flotsam & Jetsam) and more.
Scoring will be done on a 1-10 scale, and each model will be given two spotlight opportunities on the runway to be evaluated on. The judges will make the call as to which contestants move on to the next round; only one girl will be chosen to move on each night. Criteria are based on the way each contestant's personality comes out in their modeling; think, outgoing, fun, sexy.
The best from each night will be invited to come back during the Finals and have a face-off to see who the new “Rainbow Girl” promo team will be and also to determine who the first ever “Rainbow Girl” is.
Prizes include paid photo shoots for the restaurant's advertisements for a year; limo accommodations for the team and bottle service at various hotspots in Vegas; and the replacement of the Rainbow's current logo with the winner.
Las Vegas' Rainbow Bar & Grill, which is located on Paradise Road across from the Hard Rock Hotel and Café, recently celebrated its first anniversary. Its laid back, no snob attitude and growing reputation as a new playground for locals and tourists has also attracted an exciting celebrity clientele. Recently, Alice In Chains drummer Sean Kinney was there signing the “Drumhead of Fame,” and Clint Holmes—a Vegas institution who has been headlining at Harrah's for years—stopped by to pick up one of the Rainbow Bar & Grill's famous pizzas. Later, members of the band Smash Mouth came in for a bottle of vodka and pizzas, and Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul had dinner and drinks before hanging up his snare drum in the green room.

Following in the footsteps of Sunset Strip's original, still thriving Rainbow Bar & Grill—historically renowned for being one of the places where rock and roll first started—the Rainbow Bar & Grill in Las Vegas is hosting its first ever “Rock The Rainbow” local band competition.
The multi-week event kicks off Thursday, September 28 at 11 p.m. with performances by Left Arm Scar and K.D.T., two of the 16 locally based finalists chosen by the club's management.
The other contestants, who will perform over subsequent weeks, include Broken End, The Leeds, Slow To Surface, VENT, Cherry Hill, Hard Eight, Adelita's Way, Soul'd Out, Otherwise, Stocklan, Fortwentydaze, The Skooners, Conflict of Interest and Underground Rebels.
The purpose of the competition, which is the brainchild of the club's newly found “rock heritage management” and owners Jerry Greenberg and Bob Greenberg , is to find the next Vegas superstar band.
The best of the 16 competing groups will have their chance at many great prizes and opportunities, including a proverbial pot of gold for indie artists: a professional recording session at the state of the art Studio At The Palms (located at The Palms Hotel and Casino), a showcase for the #1 band (and a shot at a record deal) with Sony A&R representatives and a Saturday night spotlight gig at the famous Whiskey A Go Go on Sunset Strip, which is located just down the block from L.A.'s Rainbow Bar & Grill.
The finals are slated to be judged by some very recognizable celebrities in the rock world.

LEGENDARY SUNSET STRIP INSTITUTION
THE RAINBOW BAR & GRILL'S SECOND LOCATION ON PARADISE ROAD IN LAS VEGAS IS THE CITY'S NEW HOTSPOT WHERE LOCALS, TOURISTS, CONVENTIONEERS, AND—OH YEAH—ROCK STARS AND CELEBRITIES ALL PARTY TOGETHER

Opened in 2005 and Owned By Famed Music Industry Executives Jerry and Bob Greenberg, The Rainbow Bar & Grill Las Vegas Boasts Everything That Mario Maglieri's Legendary 34-Year-Old Sunset Location Is Famous For, Including A World Famous Menu And A Casual, “No Snobs” Attitude
* * *
Recent Celebrity Sightings Include Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Robert Plant, ZZ Top, Smash Mouth, Alice In Chains Drummer Sean Kinney, Pantera Drummer Vinnie Paul And Vegas Institution, Singer Clint Holmes
Blissfully, thanks to the cool and hip, trendy and sexy influx of legendary Los Angeles based institutions, Las Vegas is no longer in danger of becoming just another family-happy Disneyland. First was Hollywood hot dog haven Pink's, which is now serving its famous dogs in the Aladdin's Zanzibar Café. Then, hipster Beauty Bar began offering martinis and manicure demonstrations downtown. Now, Sunset Strip icon Rainbow Bar & Grill has landed on Paradise Road, across from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
When the show's over, Las Vegas' Rainbow Bar & Grill is where the headliners mingle with their fans, mirroring the explosive synergy that would happen at Mario Maglieri's 34-year-old original location when legendary rockers like Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen, Guns ‘n' Roses, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Poison, Ratt, Cinderella, Marilyn Manson, White Zombie and Black Sabbath showed up.
From 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night, the legendary vibe of the original institution—including a blessed “no snobs” attitude, warm, inviting atmosphere and no velvet rope/VIP hassles—comes alive at the wildly popular new, year old location, a truly “must experience” place where tourists, locals, conventioneers, rock stars and celebrities all party together.
You'll see them in the exact replica of the Sunset Strip restaurant's Red Room, which includes the famed Lita Ford and Motorhead picture on the wall. Or in the oversized lounge, in the Green Room, on the patio, or just roaming from room to room over the very spacious 7,500 square feet. Jerry Greenberg , co-owner of Vegas' Rainbow with brother (and fellow industry veteran) Bob Greenberg , is a famed music industry executive who started his career as a drummer. In the 70s, he became the youngest ever major label president with Atlantic Records. Naturally, then, the restaurant has photos on the walls of famous rock drummers, from Keith Moon to Ringo to Bonzo. The green room, in fact is a tribute to drummers.
Recently, Alice In Chains drummer Sean Kinney was there signing the “Drumhead of Fame” and Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul had dinner and drinks before hanging up his snare drum in the green room.
The word is out, thanks in part to word of mouth and Las Vegas Weekly's designation of the Rainbow as “Best Bar Off The Strip.” Or maybe it was another tastemaking publication's rave that it's the city's “best place to see celebrities.” Then again, it was probably being chosen as the “Best Place to See Famous People After They've Been Drinking” in Las Vegas Life's 2005 Vegas 100 issue.
They must be referring to Paris or Lindsay. Robert Plant and ZZ Top. Hey, even Clint Holmes—a Vegas institution who has been headlining at Harrah's for years—stopped by to pick up one of the Rainbow Bar & Grill's famous pizzas. And members of the band Smash Mouth came in for a bottle of vodka and pizzas.
The head chef Ernie is also a major attraction, replicating the Sunset Strip location's menu with Mario's famous chicken soup and pizza recipe. And keeping it “all in the family,” Mario's granddaughter Marlo Maglieri—who started working with her grandfather as an 18-year-old bartender at the original location—is GM of the Rainbow in Vegas.
And those cool, only at The Rainbow photos (Ozzy reading the paper on a toilet, an eviction notice served to Guns N Roses before Axl and the boys made it big) don't hurt.
Not that Jerry Greenberg is spreading or publicizing the celebrity quotient; he wants everyone, not just the movers, shakers and beautiful people, to feel right at home at the Rainbow. “We're not just trying to be the place where the rich and famous go, but we want them to know they can come here and hang out and be treated properly,” he says. “We have extra security to make sure no one is hassled, but everyone's generally very cool and respectful. Since we opened in June of 2005, we've become the place everybody knows to come to when they want to hang out after dancing at Pure or Tao till 4 a.m. If they're still hungry, they can come in for breakfast or a snack. There's no other place in Vegas you can walk into and hear Guns N Roses, the Stones, Audioslave and Korn on 15 video screens while enjoying food and drinks!
“It's a lot like the original Rainbow on Sunset, where people came over after a show down the block at The Whisky A Go Go (which was also owned by Maglieri),” Greenberg adds. “Now we're the place to go after the shows across the street at the Hard Rock. Bob, myself and our great staff are dedicated to providing the same great courtesy, service and food that Mario has given people in L.A. for years.”
The Rainbow on Sunset was always a favorite place for Greenberg—later well known as president and CEO of Michael Jackson's MJJ Music from 1993 to 2000--to hang with all of the acts he worked with on Atlantic (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Foreigner, Genesis, CSNY, Eric Clapton, et al), especially after big concerts. He and Bob approached their longtime friend Maglieri a few years ago with the idea of creating a joint venture to open a new location in Las Vegas.
“He did his homework and knew we would keep the tradition!” laughs Greenberg. “I have my own independent record company, but I was always looking beyond just being a music executive and to open a place like this. I own the rights to a lot of shows I'm working on getting into major hotels in Vegas, and as I was spending more time here, I realized there's no real hangout for rock and roll people. The heck with it, I thought, let's open a club!
“Mario gave us a license and we searched for a year to find a suitable location,” he adds. “We lucked out when the space across from the Hard Rock became available. In just over a year, we've become the equivalent to what the Rainbow became on Sunset. All the bands and locals show up, we've got great food, and we're rolling. Honestly, Bob and I never expected it to take off this fast. But with its success, we're thinking globally. I own the Rainbow name worldwide, and we're talking about possibly opening new locations in Orlando, London and Japan. We're a mini-Hard Rock in the making.”
The Rainbow Bar & Grill holds a gaming license, which means people visiting the bar are coming to drink and eat, dance and mingle, and can play video poker, keno, or black jack all night long. The interior features concert lighting, a small stage for live entertainment, bar seating, table service and a V.I.P. dining lounge.
Major staff members at Las Vegas' Rainbow Bar & Grill include Marketing/Entertainment Manager Mark Hornsby , Director of Operations Steve Rothman , and Manager Ziggy Pawlowski .
